A motorist in the Isle of Wight crashed into a post after he spotted a spider inside his car.

The man was driving on Kite Hill, Wootton, in the north of the island on Monday when he noticed the unwelcome creepy crawly.

The spider was clearly quite distracting.

However, in his attempts to remove the arachnid, he took his eyes off the road and ended up smashing into a post. Fortunately, he came away from the crash with only minor injuries.

In a Facebook post, Isle of Wight Police said: "Our ARV/colleagues have had a busy afternoon. They currently are dealing with this vehicle on Kite Hill in Wootton so please bear this in mind when you are passing through this way as the traffic might be slightly slower moving until this vehicle is recovered.

"This driver was trying to remove a spider from his vehicle at the time of this incident.

"We are glad to say the driver only has minor injuries from this incident but as always please keep your eyes on the road as there are lots of distractions around at this time of year."

In May, an American woman and her brother were lucky to avoid serious injuries after a turtle somehow launched into the air and came crashing through their windscreen.

Latonya Lark and her brother Kevin were driving down the Harry S. Truman Parkway in Savannah, Georgia when the unexpected passenger made its dramatic entry into the car.

At first, the pair thought it was a brick speeding towards their car through the air, but after the projectile shattered the front window they realised it was in fact a turtle.

Kevin was in the passenger seat at the time but managed to shield his face as the animal battered through the windshield and sent glass flying through the air.

Luckily, he was not seriously injured and suffered only minor cuts, according to WSAV-TV.

However, the turtle was not so lucky, and died from its injuries at a local animal hospital later on.

Latonya reckoned another car might have hit the turtle first and sent it flying to the air, before it eventually collided with their car.

She said: "Even the police officer said if that glass wasn't as thick as it was and I didn't slow down the way I did when I saw the object coming, it would've been disastrous."
