Husband held his dying wife in arms after horror jet ski crash in Spain

Chris Wright has told of his heartbreak following the passing of his beloved wife Debra

The heartbroken husband of a woman who died following a fatal jet ski crash has told how he held her in his arms as she passed away.

Mother-of-four Debra Wright, 47, was tragically killed on Saturday (28 June) while holidaying in Spain with her devastated husband Chris.

The couple, from Standish, Wigan, were riding jet skis near Playa de Los Toros in Manilva, Malaga, when horror struck off the Costa del Sol.

A speedboat is said to have struck the jet ski which Debra was a passenger on while her husband steered.

The Guardia Civil police force said the deadly incident unfolded at about 7pm on Saturday evening - while Chris watched on powerlessly.

The 52-year-old chairman of Ashton Town Football Club has now harrowingly told how he 'swam to' his wife 'to hold her in his arms until she passed away'.

Paying tribute to Debra, he told The Times: "My darling wife was a 47-year-old mother of four wonderful sons Stuart, Jack, Josh and Leon and a nanny to seven beautiful grandchildren.

"She was an incredible sister and doting daughter. She was our compass, the glue to bind the family.

"An amazing woman whose glow would fill any room. She was so enigmatic, inspirational and loving. Our family will never be the same."

Despite resuscitation efforts, Debra - who Chris described as 'one of a kind' - was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Ashton Town FC shared the news of the mum's death with 'deep sadness and a heavy heart' in a short statement.

"Our family are in mourning at this sad time and we ask for time for Chris and his family and everyone at the club to be able to start to come to terms with this tragedy," it said. "RIP Debra, fly high sweetheart x."

In a series of poignant social media posts, her sons have been detailing the overwhelming grief they are now wading through.

One of Debra's offspring, Stu Mcdonald, wrote on Facebook: "I’m so angry and upset, totally lost, I don’t even know how to move forward without you.

"You are my Mum, my best friend, I wish I could swap places with you, if I could knowing you would be OK I would do it in a heartbeat.

"It would be impossible to thank you for everything you have done for us, you loved me when I couldn’t love myself, you’ve backed me every step of the way. I really hope I made you just the tiniest bit proud."

Another one of her boys, Leon Wright, also said: "Mum you were one of a kind. Words can’t describe how much I’m missing you right now.

"You was the life and soul of every party, I am so happy to be called your son and I couldn’t have asked for anyone better to be my Mum.

"I just want to say thank you for all the great memories you have given me, thank you for all your support you have given me, thank you for all your love you have given and thank you for everything else that you have done for me.

"I will make sure Riley and Ava know how amazing their Nanny Deb was and they will never forget you."

The driver of the speedboat reportedly failed a breath test for alcohol, although it was said to have only been a 'low' reading, according to The Times.

He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, as well as an alcohol‑related offence, before being released under investigation.

The Foreign Office confirmed it is 'supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Spain'.
