Alton Towers spa attraction forced to permanently close after 21 years

The theme park confirmed that the attraction closed on 31 December 2023

Alton Towers has permanently closed its spa attraction after 21 years.

The UK theme park - which has been in operation since 1980 - said it was a 'difficult decision' to close the highly-rated spa.

Located in Staffordshire, England, near the village of Alton, the resort complex includes a theme park, water park, mini golf and hotel.

It was ranked as the number one resort for theme park attendance back in 2021, with a reported 1.8 million visitors.

In 2022, the attendance increased to 2,300,000 and with over 40 attractions to pick from, there's no wonder why people keep coming back.

However, one attraction that hasn't made it to the new year is The Alton Towers Spa, which was permanently closed on 31 December, 2023.

A spokesperson at Alton Towers Resort said: “After careful consideration, we have taken the difficult decision to close the Spa located on-site.

“This was a difficult decision but one we feel is essential for the future growth and development of the Resort.

“Our top priority has been supporting our employees at the Spa during this time, including with advice on career opportunities available across the Resort.

“We are also in the process of contacting guests with bookings in 2024 to discuss alternative options.

“We sincerely appreciate the loyalty and support of our valued guests and dedicated colleagues throughout the years.”

With nearly 200 'excellent' reviews on Tripadvisor, the spa was clearly popular among visitors.

"It was a fantastic day really lovely and clean and the facilities were brilliant," one review read.

Another guest added: "We went to the spa for my partner's 50th birthday. The staff are lovely, everything was spotlessly clean and the treatments were amazing!!! Definitely recommend and would go back!!"

Someone else said: "Had a fantastic time at the Towers spa last Sunday. Good range of facilities, more than we expected. Superb massages by Lucy, really got to work on my knots! Delicious lunch in the restaurant and a fab range of cocktails."

This comes after last year's announcement that the ‘UK’s favourite rollercoaster’ will be returning in 2024.

In an exciting update in April 2023, Bianca Sammut, Divisional Director at Alton Towers Resort, said: “As Europe’s first ever inverted rollercoaster, Nemesis rightly holds legendary status among thrillseekers.

“At Alton Towers Resort we’re committed to providing visitors with stand-out attractions that are unmatched by anyone else.

“Reaching this latest milestone in the transformation of Nemesis is a proud moment for everyone involved in the project.

“And for all thrillseekers out there it means the day we can take the wraps off our 'thrilliant' revamp is edging ever closer."

In November, the theme park's official teaser video titled: "BACK WITH A VENGEANCE," got everyone hyped.
