Brits will get pint for free if they say four-word code in pub during Euros

Given how England played against Iceland, you might need it

Euro 2024 kicks off next Friday (14 June) with a match where hosts Germany will play Scotland, and Brits will be able to get a free pint in certain pubs across the land.

It's only available for a very specific time frame, but with over 800 pubs participating, there's a decent chance you'll be near enough one to take advantage.

This is a one-time deal that's only good for the preamble to Germany vs Scotland, so you'll need to say it between 6pm and 7pm next Friday.

A more cynical man than I might suggest this was a ploy by a particular pub chain to get you into their establishments on matchday, so while one pint before the game is free the ones you buy afterwards are in their pubs.

That's what I might suggest if I was more cynical but the Euros are a time for optimism, at least for a few minutes until crushing reality kicks in.

As for how to get this free pint before the first game of the Euros, if you're at a Greene King pub at the time and date we've told you then you can go up to the bar and say: "For pub and country."

If you do that in one of over 800 venues across England, Scotland and Wales (sorry Northern Ireland, I don't make the rules) then you ought to be handed a free pint to quaff.

You can enjoy that in the summer evening sunshine as the pre-match preamble talks up Scotland's chances of beating Germany.

While pundits discuss whether the Tartan Army will 'make it hard for them' or be 'difficult to break down' and other platitudes to avoid the fact that one team are the clear favourites - and it ain't the ones with a Saltire for a flag - you can be drinking.

With all this four-word code stuff, it's like you're a spy, albeit one that's planning on doing no subterfuge and is instead going to be sitting in a pub watching the football.

Of course, you ought to be careful to please drink responsibly, because if you get paralytic before Scotland make me eat my words and pull off a win against hosts Germany, then you might miss the big moment.

Greene King have a tool to find your nearest pub doing this offer, so you can make use of that.

We've been talking about a free pint, but if beer isn't your tipple of choice you can also pick between ciders, spirits and soft drinks on offer.

Just think, about six days from now you could have that first drink down you and wondering if anything is possible ahead of Scotland's kick-off.

Meanwhile, England fans will have to wait a couple of days more before the Euros really begin for them, so they might as well show up to watch Scotland.

I just hope both teams have fun.
