Brits have been warned not to use a specific kitchen appliance after 4pm if they want to save money on their energy bills.

The cost of living is reaching depressingly high levels and many people are feeling like they're really have a tough time coping, particularly when it's shaping up to be one of the most expensive times of the year.

Beyond the expenses of Christmas, winter brings with it all sorts of other costs as Brits have got to spend more to avoid being cold in their own homes.

There are some pieces of advice on how to heat your home without spending too much money, but it's a constant battle to claw back some cash from an ever hungrier beast.

Part of that battle is something called 'agile tariffs' which some energy providers offer, where they prices are upgraded regularly and means someone on them could save money during times of the day when energy rates are low.

According to the Daily Express, the way to take advantage of this is to try and get your expensive appliance usage in during the times when tariffs are low and avoid them when they're higher.

However, this would mean that if you wanted to save the most money you'd not want to be using your oven after 4pm, as it's one of the most expensive things in your house to run.

I'm sure you can already see a bit of a glaring issue with this, as not using the oven beyond 4pm would just mean not using it at all for many households.

Most folks aren't even back from work before 4pm, and sticking on the oven is an important part of the preparation of many an evening meal.

As much as people might save money on their energy bills if they don't use their most expensive appliances during certain times, there's a practical hurdle to overcome for a lot of people.

Llewellyn Kynch, CEO of Make My House Green, explained that you should check to see if your energy provider offers agile tariffs and to see when their off-peak hours are.

He said these times would normally be mentioned on your energy bills and by using them you could navigate your way through getting the cheapest energy usage possible.

Of course this advice won't apply if you're with a company that doesn't offer agile tariffs, but even then it's useful to be aware which things you have around your home which are costing you the most to use.

Even if you have to use your oven after 4pm it could help you realise how much that roast dinner is really costing you.
