A woman is still baffled by the mysterious disappearance of her husband two years ago while on holiday in Greece, but she has a sad theory about what could have happened to him.

Heidi Wolstenhulme and her husband of more than 40 years David were on holiday on the Greek island of Serifos at the time of his disappearance, and there’s still no clue what actually happened to him.

The 69-year-old decided to take a hike on his own while the rest of their group did something else.

He never came back.

That was in June 2021, and there’s been no sign of him since.

He was wearing a blue backpack, blue shorts and a walking top, as well as a hat at the time.

As an experienced walker, his wife just expected to see him later on his return, but it never happened.

David Wolstenhulme went out for a walk in Greece and disappeared.

A large rescue operation yielded no news, finding no evidence of David or what happened to him.

In an interview with The Sun, his wife said: "It's two years now since Dave disappeared and nobody can find anything at all.

"I’d love for him to be alive I just can't imagine that he is because he had nowhere to go.

"He wasn't going to be able to go anywhere really because there were still Covid restrictions and didn't have anything with him, not his passport.

"You don't imagine something like that is going to happen to you. It's like watching something on the TV.

"We just can't believe it especially with him being such an experienced walker.”

Even though there are no clues to what might have happened, there are a couple of theories.

David and Heide were on the Greek island of Serifos at the time of his disappearance.

Heide continued: “I know accidents happen or he may have had a heart attack.

"I just can't understand where he was going.

“I have this awful feeling that he's gone through the ground because there are some old mines in the area.

"I just wonder whether the ground has given way - it's an awful thought."

The pair – from North Yorkshire – flew to Greece in 2021 for their holiday, staying in Athens before visiting some of the islands.

David’s lone walk was not an unusual thing for him to be doing, and he’d left with ‘just enough euros for the day’ and without his passport.

"Dave doesn't like sitting on the beach much, he likes to go walking - his other friends didn't want to go with him because it was too hot but it never really bothered Dave,” his wife explained.

"I really can’t imagine what happened to him, it’s just unreal really. It's unbelievable he just vanished.

"I still need some answers, I want to know what happened."

At the minute, David is still considered a missing person, and has not been declared dead, even though it has been two years.

That means that there are financial problems, too.

Heide can’t access his pension, and is currently waiting for a court to decide what will happen with that.

The rest of the family would like closure too.

Heide is still appealing for anyone in the area to keep their eyes out for anything that might lead to information about David’s disappearance.

"I would just like to appeal to the authorities to have another search concentrating on the area where his phone was last in signal," she said.

"And to put out an appeal to the locals reminding them that he is still out there somewhere and if anyone is out hiking in the hills to keep an eye open especially if they see a Blue Tilley hat or anything bright blue on the ground."
