The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has released a list of banned number plates which will no longer be available from 2026 onwards.
Every year, the agency publishes a list of plates which are deemed inappropriate or offensive in one way or another, which won't be allowed on British roads.
It's usually any vulgar or offensive wordplay that's withheld, or anything politically related as a number of plates this year which are on the no-go list are linked to some ongoing conflicts in the world.
In 2025, number plates such as 'BO25 LOX' and 'EU25 WAR' were placed on the extensive banned list ahead of the introduction of '25' number plates, with the number '5' often used to replace the letter 'S' on plates as well.

Anything rude with number-letter combinations linked to crime, racism, or religion are a big no-no, while the DVLA also holds the right to veto any plates which may be considered insulting.
While many might not think to spend extra on a custom plate, there are still a number of people who would go the extra mile to splash the cash on a personalised combination for their car.
The DVLA are responsible for around 53 million driver records and over 47 million vehicle records and while you can get a personalised plate on other websites, you can purchase some on their own site.
Twice a year, they must review new number plates and decide what can and can't be displayed on UK roads.
The likes of 'AA26 NAL' and 'FU26 KER' are included in the full list of banned plates, which includes a number of terms deemed inappropriate, stretching to upwards of 400 combinations.
A number of the combinations released predominantly refer to areas of war, such as Russia, Gaza, and Yemen, while words such as 'bomb' and 'mugger' among sexual references such as 'STD' have been permanently banned from our roads.
The RAC says on its website: "In the most recent police data, 2020 figures showed that 13,720 drivers were stopped by police for having illegal number plates."
They also explain that number plates must use the Charles Wright 2001 font, with details such as style, thickness, size or spacing of the letters and number potentially making the plate illegal.
If your plate is modified in any way or doesn't meet this criteria, you could be fined up to £1,000.
