Winter is well and truly here, with parts of the UK set to plummet to -12C this week and the Met Office issuing a snow warning.

If you're finding yourself with chattering teeth and shivering violently, despite donning your thickest winter coat, there might be a simple explanation why.

When was the last time you took a close look at your coat's inner lining or composition label?

Well, you might want to take a closer look as scientists have weighed in on the best filling to keep you cosy this winter - and we've got the lowdown.

For optimal cosiness, you'll be wanting a coat with down filling (or a vegan-friendly alternative).

A recent scientific paper laid out the superior thermal insulating properties of the substance, explaining that "using goose down for insulation, combined with durable synthetic fabrics, addresses the need for extreme cold protection and longevity."

It was also found that down traps air and allows it to heat up, while also allowing your skin to breathe at the same time.

Now's the time to treat yourself to a new coat which will keep you snug throughout the colder months, and can be an investment for years to come.

What is down filling and how is it made?

Down is the soft layer of fine feathers found underneath the outer feathers of birds (usually ducks and geese). It’s made up of tiny, fluffy clusters that trap warm air and keep cold out (that’s why down is great for winter coats and bedding).

To make down filling, these feathers are carefully collected (ideally, but not always as a by-product of the food industry), cleaned, and treated to remove dust and oils.

The finished product is a lightweight, breathable, and super-warm material that’s soft to touch and naturally insulating; perfect for winter coats.

Some people avoid down because it can involve plucking feathers from live birds or poor animal welfare on farms.

Ethical down is sourced as a by-product of the food industry and certified under standards like the Responsible Down Standard (RDS). Vegan alternatives use recycled or plant-based fibres instead.

What is the UK weather forecast for November 2025?

This week has already seen the coldest night since March - brrr.

And with snow and temperatures of -12C forecast in parts of the UK over the coming weeks, the Met Office has warned that the phenomenon which caused the infamous 2018 'Beast from the East' could soon return.

It's all down to the polar vortex, described as a 'swirling mass of very cold air that sits above the Earth's poles'.

It causes freezing cold Arctic air to travel southwards, bringing the chill to our shores.

These can bring extensive snowfall, and even blizzards, with plunging temperatures that'll have you reaching for your scarf and gloves too.
