Government bans Nando's from selling bottomless Coca-Cola leaving customers furious

All restaurants and cafes will have to comply with the new laws

Politicians are rarely popular but the UK government's latest decision might just be one step too far as it looks set to make a huge difference to the way some people enjoy Nando's.

The government have made it clear that they are keen to crack down on childhood obesity, with Keir Starmer promising the healthiest generation of children ever after launching the Child Health Action Plan in January last year.

This particular law was first suggested by the Tory government back in 2019, with restrictions based on location first coming into place back in 2022.

But now we're starting to see more and more plans take effect, as it was confirmed that buy one get one free offers on sugary items such as chocolate bars will be banned in supermarkets.

We can't even see beautiful breakfast pastries on our televisions anymore after the government commissioned an advertising ban on certain foods, which also include ice cream and cake. Just talking about them is enough to get me hungry.

And the latest decision, which took effect on 1 October, sees the new UK Government High Fat, Salt and Sugar (HFSS) legislation come into play, which restricts the sale of these in stores and online.

So, for those of you who enjoy a full fat coke, rather than the daily 'fridge cigarette' diet coke, you'll now no longer be able to enjoy bottomless Coca-Cola Classic at Nando's. Looks like it's the government who are being cheeky on this occasion.

Nando's writes: "From 1st October 2025, new UK Government High Fat, Salt and Sugar (HFSS) legislation comes into play that all restaurants in England need to follow. As a result, we can no longer offer Bottomless Coca-Cola Classic because of its high sugar content.

"Customers are allowed one glass of Coca-Cola Classic but can still help themselves to any of our other low-sugar bottomless drinks.

"We know this is a change to how customers can enjoy one of our popular soft drinks, and we hope it doesn’t take away from your experience. All our other low-sugar fizzy bottomless drinks aren’t affected."

While this feels like a rather small change in the scheme of things, customers are less than happy about being told what they can and cannot drink.

One X user wrote: "Welcome to the nanny state." Another said: "This must be a joke."

A third joked that 'Jamie Oliver started it' and frankly I do think we're all still annoyed that he got rid of the turkey twizzlers and potato smiley faces.

Although some are suggesting that this can be compared to George Orwell's 1984 and 'Big Brother', it's just a glass of coke at the end of the day. And if you're that desperate to have another glass, I'm sure you can pick some up at your local supermarket - so long as it's not buy one get one free.

A spokesperson for UKHospitality said: "From 1 October, hospitality businesses will be complying with new regulations that have introduced a ban on free refills of sugar-sweetened drinks. Venues work hard to ensure that customers have a wide range of drink options to choose from when they visit our sector, and will continue to ensure that is the case."
