Having a chunk of free money land in your account this week without having to do anything sounds like a dream to be honest.

A bit of extra cash for some food and drink in the pub garden in this warm weather or even just some money to cover this month’s bills would go down a treat.

And luckily for Nationwide customers, millions of them up and down the UK will be getting a boost to their bank accounts from this week.

Yep, if you’re with the building society, you should be getting a nice little gift of £50 as part of ‘The Big Nationwide Thank You’ initiative.

Being given to over 12 million eligible members, it was initially stated that these payments will start being made as soon as tomorrow (9 April).

And if you don’t get it through this week, there’s no need to get flustered as Nationwide have said all payments should arrive by 30 April.

The whole initiative is happening so Nationwide can thank its members ‘for enabling the successful purchase of Virgin Money’.

It explained that last year’s acquisition of Virgin Money was a result of its financial strength ‘which its members have helped build’

This company takeover was led by the UK’s best-known female banker, Debbie Crosbie, who has previously been labelled as one of the world’s 50 most influential women.

The Nationwide CEO said: “Nationwide became even stronger when it bought Virgin Money and we are already improving services for its customers. The Big Nationwide Thank You recognises the role our members played in building the financial strength that made the deal possible. It’s another of the very real benefits of being a member of Nationwide and our modern mutual model.”

Eligible members were written to by the banking society last month to inform them of the details.

In order to qualify for this nice 50 quid in your account, you’ll need to have been a Nationwide member on 30 September 2024 and then still be a member when it comes to the payment being made.

It adds that in the last 12 months to the end of last September, members must also have:

  • had at least one qualifying transaction on your Nationwide current account or savings account, or
  • had at least £100 in total in one or more of your Nationwide current accounts and savings accounts, or
  • owed at least £100 in total on one or more Nationwide residential mortgages.

You can check on the Nationwide site to see if you’re eligible for The Big Nationwide Thank You and hopefully you’ll be receiving the free £50 in your account from this week.
