Shocking footage shows moment bodybuilder suffers horror injury as he leg presses 400kg

He suffered one of the worst injuries in sport

A bodybuilder suffered a horrific injury while leg pressing 400kg, which he caught on camera and shared on his social media.

Brazilian bodybuilder Ranieri Lopes Filho, like many others, was filming his gym workouts for his social media page as he prepared for a competition scheduled for May.

During his workout, which he filmed at a gym in Piaui, Brazil, Ranieri decided to use the leg press machine, putting the weight at 400kg for a second rep.

However, the weight proved too much, and his right knee buckled under the strain, with the sound of the rupture audible as clear as day on the video.

In the footage, the 31-year-old can be seen clutching his knee while screaming out in pain, as gym staff and other customers help him by pulling the weights off the end of the bar and lifting the machine off of him.

The emergency services were contacted, and he was rushed to the hospital, where it was discovered that he had torn his quadriceps tendon.

According to OthoInfo, if severe, a quadriceps tendon rupture can be a disabling injury; however, a small tear can cause pain or make walking difficult. In any case, surgery is almost always required, along with physical therapy, to regain full knee function.

Ranieri then shared the video of his injury on his Instagram, along with two pictures of himself in the hospital, with one showing his bandaged knee.

Medics have advised the bodybuilder to completely rest his injured knee for three weeks, as he cannot bend it. He also requires physiotherapy and electric stimulation therapy to aid in his recovery.

While he underwent an operation, he has been cautioned that it could take several months before he is able to walk properly, and any training, even on the lighter end, is unlikely until the end of the year.

Orthopaedic surgeon Anisio Castelo Branco told Brazilian media: "In about three weeks he will be able to walk with the use of a brace, keeping his knee extended and from the sixth to the eighth week we will remove the brace and allow him to walk and gain muscle strength."

In the caption of the video, he wrote: "Although each experience is unique, it's the decisions we make that guide the meaning of our existence.

"Thus, life presents numerous challenges whose consequences reveal both the weight of decisions and the false alternatives that offer us only the illusion of freedom."

He added: "It was an indescribable pain, but along with it came the frustration of knowing that all the planning to compete in May had gone down the drain.

"The post-surgery pain was even worse than that of the accident."

Many commenters online wished him well in his recovery, as one person said they were 'sending you good energy to help you recover as soon as possible', while another wrote for him to 'have faith and stay strong'.
