April is approaching, and with it comes a rise in Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), which will especially be noticed by those who are getting one of the 59 cars that pay the highest rate.

A couple of years ago, the top rate of VED was £2,745, but last year that shot up to £5,490 as the government wanted to 'drive the transition to electric vehicles', and now it's going up to £5,690 for the first year.

That top rate is a first-year premium paid on cars registered after 2017, which produce over 255 grams of CO2 per kilometre travelled, so for the first year you have the car, you might be paying a lot of money.

From 1 April, the standard annual rate most motorists in the UK will pay is going up from £195 a year to £200, but for those who just got a car, that first-year rate may be smaller or larger depending on how polluting the vehicle is.

Cars with a list price of over £40,000 when they are new, or £50,000 if you're driving an EV, also have to pay an extra rate of £440 on top of that standard rate of £200 for five years.

If you got a new car, this is what you'll be paying in Vehicle Excise Duty for the first year you pay it, depending on how polluting it is.
