Woolworths could be set for return to UK high streets after 15 years

Woolworths could be set for return to UK high streets after 15 years

As long as there's pick 'n' mix, we'll be happy

It's been over 10 years since Woolworths shut shop in the UK. And we're still desperately missing its pick 'n' mix stand.

If you've also noticed the Woolworths-shaped hole in your life, we have some good news. It might be coming back to the UK.

We don't want to get anyone's hopes up unnecessarily, but it does look very promising indeed.

There have long been rumours that Woolworths might make a comeback in the UK, but this time the news comes from a senior figure in the business.

Woolworths Germany CEO Roman Heini has said there's a chance the shop will start operating in Britain once again.

In fact, it's said to be on his 'bucket list'.

“I don’t know of any brands where the recognition will be as high as it is in Britain, without having any stores," he told Retail Week.

"We have secured all the trademarks for the brand for the whole of Europe, so we could operate if we make the decision. It may be in the mix for the mid or long-term future.

“There are over 300 million potential consumers in Europe and no dominating player. The market is still there to be divided between the potential players for the future.”

While the German branch of Woolworths also collapsed back in 2009, it managed to make its way back to the high street, and later expanded into Austria and Poland.

People are pretty excited about the prospect of the much-loved chain returning.

One person said on X: "The UK has never been the same without the opportunity to buy pick n mix, cd singles, and black plimsolls all in one store."

And another said: "Oh yes please - I miss Woolworths."

While Brits are huge fans of Woolworths, the love for the store travels far and wide.

A woman in Australia has revealed she travels 10 hours just to do her shopping at the chain.

Ell Regan (@ell.regan) lives in Barkly homestead in the Northern Territory. Any time she needs to go shopping, she has to make a 450km journey across the Queensland border for her nearest Woolworths and Kmart, which is located in Mount Isa.

"Just on our way home from Woolies... five hour trip. Yeah, 10-hour round trip," she told followers.

"These are my closest Woolies... we have IGA which is two hours away, but I wanted to go to Kmart so I went to Mount Isa."

Not gonna' lie, we are loving her dedication to the supermarket.
