Reason why Christa Pike's accomplice avoided the death penalty despite being convicted of the same murder
Christa Pike was not alone when she bludgeoned her classmate Colleen Slemmer to death – so why was she the only perpetrator who received the death penalty?
According to court documents, Pike, her then-boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp and their friend Shadolla Peterson lured Colleen into the woods near their dormitory in Knoxville, Tennessee, in January 1995.
Pike and Shipp spent the following 30 minutes brutally attacking the 19-year-old with various weapons while Peterson stood guard. Pike, then 18, would be the one responsible for ending Colleen's life, hitting her on the back of her head with an asphalt rock.
It's believed that Pike was the one who came up with the plan, believing Colleen to have been romantically interested in Shipp at the time.

Colleen's body was found a day later, leading to the arrest of Shipp, Peterson and Pike.
Following the arrest, Shipp, Peterson and Pike were all charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.
Peterson later agreed to testify against both Shipp and Pike, providing prosecutors with a timeline of events for Slemmer's murder. She later pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact, receiving probation.
Meanwhile, both Shipp and Pike were found guilty on both counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.
Why didn't Tadaryl Shipp receive a death sentence?
While Pike was sentenced to death for her actions, Shipp received life in prison with the possibility of parole.
As the case has regained notoriety once again due to Pike's failed execution, many have wondered why Shipp didn't receive the same fate.
This is due to a nationwide law across the US which prohibits the death penalty from being applied to anyone under the age of 18, according to the Death Penalty Information Centre. Meaning that while Shipp, who was 17 at the time of the murder, was tried as an adult, he was not old enough for the death penalty to be considered.
Where is Tadaryl Shipp now?
Three decades on from his conviction, Shipp is incarcerated at Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, Tennessee, where he is serving out his life sentence.
According to a report from WATE, Shipp was refused parole in October 2025, with a spokesperson for the Tennessee Parole Board saying this was 'due to the seriousness of the offence'.
He will next be eligible for parole in October 2031.
As for Pike, her legal team have stated that she remains hospitalised in a 'critical condition' following the failed execution attempts.
Few details have been made public about her health, with her lawyer Randy Spivey telling reporters: "We don't have a sense of her prognosis or much update on her health at the moment."
It's currently unclear whether or not the state will attempt to execute her in the future.
