Cause of death confirmed for toddler whose mum was 'invested' in Lindsay Clancy trial

The cause of death of a toddler whose body was found hanging from basement rafters at his home has been determined by authorities.

Two-year-old Barrett Walsh was discovered by a neighbour at his Frankfort, Illinois home on September 1. His mother, Corie Walsh, 40, was also found at the horrific scene, allegedly attempting to harm herself with a knife.

Corie has since been arrested in connection with the death of her son.

The cause of death was determined as asphyxia, “due to ligature compression of the neck,” according to People.com.

The neighbour is reported to have informed police officers she had located Barrett in the basement and saw him “hanging in the basement on a device from a rafter,” states the court petition.

Tragically, the neighbour said she did try CPR on the child, however his body was cold and there was no pulse.

Prosecutors filed a petition to deny Corie pretrial release. In another detail, the two school-age older siblings of Barrett returned home shortly after his body was found, states the petition.

Police stated Corie was “invested” in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial, which has brought the issue of postpartum psychosis into public attention.

Robert Kerr, the lawyer representing Corie, told a court last week his client had suffered “a brief psychotic disorder” during the time of her son’s death.

He also said witnesses saw Corie behaving “out of character” in the lead up to the death – sending a blizzard of distressed messages to a WhatsApp group.

According to witness accounts shared in the court, Corie allegedly believed in a debunked conspiracy theory that Lindsay Clancy’s ex was linked to the killing of the couple’s children.

Clancy’s own lawyer has condemned the false claims, but this has not stopped some from believing it.

Last week, Corie’s husband broke his silence about the arrest of his wife, speaking in defence of her. She appeared at Will County Court on September 8, where Judge Amy Bertani ruled she should be held in custody.

ABC 7 reported the judge as saying, “There is clear and convincing evidence that she is involved in a first-degree murder offense and is a clear and present threat to husband and other children."

Corie allegedly told attending officers at the scene that her son was “the devil” and the “anti-Christ.”

Her husband did not attend the hearing, however Kerr told the court he and Corie’s mother had requested he communicate their “unwavering support” for her.

Barrett, known as “Bear”, was the third child of Corie’s four children. The fourth child, who is still an infant, was found unharmed in the home, police say.

Corie stands charged with three counts of murder in the first degree, according to online court records. She is due to appear in court again on September 24.
