Donald Trump's former advisor warns president 'will run for third term' despite constitutional limit

Steve Bannon, the former White House Chief Strategist, reckons Trump 2028 is pretty much a done deal

The possibility of 'Trump 2028' is a very real one, according to the US President's ex-advisor Steve Bannon.

Although the US constitution explicitly prohibits anyone from taking on the role of commander-in-chief three times, the former White House Chief Strategist reckons Donald Trump will find a way to do it.

Bannon revealed that Trump's team are considering 'many different alternatives' to ensure that he will get back in office, suggesting that there are plenty of 'methods' at their disposal.

His comments come a week after 'Trump 2028' merch hit the market, with some products featuring the words 'rewrite the rules' - suggesting a reform to the 22nd Amendment could be on the cards.

This law - which was introduced back in 1951 - explicitly forbids anyone from being elected as President on more than two occasions.

It was brought in after Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected four times, despite every his predecessors following the unwritten rule of stepping down after two.

However, Bannon would still put big money on the fact that the 78-year-old will be back in the Oval Office in 2028.

The former political strategist, who served alongside Trump for seven months of his first presidency, told the Apocalypse Now? podcast that it's pretty much a sure-fire thing.

"There are methods which you could do it," Bannon said. "President Trump is going to be eligible, is going to run again, and will win again. And I will tell you, on the afternoon of the 20th January of 2029, he's going be in the White House signing executive orders."

Bannon also discussed his belief in Trump triumphing in 2028 despite the rules of the constitution during an interview with NewsNation.

"We have many different alternatives to make sure President Trump on the afternoon of January 2029 is the President of the United States, many different alternatives," the former investment banker said.

"And we will roll those out over time."

How could Trump run for a third term?

Despite it being legally impossible according to the constitution, there has been theoretical discussions about ways in which Trump could take office again.

US law professor, Danny Karon, told LADbible that there were three possibilities of this happening; if Vice President JD Vance ran for office with Trump as his VP, Trump being selected for the position of VP, or change the constitution.

However, Karon says each possibility runs into some problems, so it's not known if any would actually work.

What has Trump said about running for a third term?

The thought of becoming president for a third time has seemingly came across Trump's mind before, and he's spoken about the idea several times.

When asked by NBC News about it, he said he 'was not joking' when talking about a third term.

"A lot of people want me to do it," he said. "But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration. I’m focused on the current."

And recently, Trump told TIME that where there's a will, there's a way, however, it's not something he wishes to discuss at the moment.

"I'd rather not discuss that now, but as you know, there are some loopholes that have been discussed that are well known," he told the publication ahead of his 100th day in office.

"But I don't believe in loopholes. I don't believe in using loopholes."
