In the wake of Rob and Michele's deaths, it has emerged that Nick and the When Harry Met Sally director reportedly had an 'argument' the night before while attending Conan O'Brien's Christmas party.

According to the LA Times, Rob and his son had attended the festive bash hosted by O'Brien on Saturday, 13 December ,and had been seen arguing with each other at the event. It's also reported that Nick was seen acting 'strangely' at the party.

The bodies of Rob and Michele were discovered inside their home at around 3:30pm following day. Both the director and his wife are understood to have died from injuries consistent with multiple stab wounds.

Nick was arrested at 21:15pm (local time) the same day.

The second of three children born to Rob and Michele, Nick had spoken openly about his struggles with addiction and homelessness since being a teenager.

The Reiners previously revealed to the LA Times how a line in the film - which sees the father tell his son 'I’d rather you hate me and you be alive' - was inspired by a real-life conversation.

78-year-old Rob also revealed that the process of making the movie 'brought us closer together' and allowed him to be ‘a better father’.

Nick had continued to struggle with addiction in the years following the film's release, revealing in a 2018 interview on the podcast Dopey that he'd ended up wrecking everything in his parents' guesthouse after 'punching out different things' while using cocaine.

Meanwhile, The New York Times revealed he'd once experienced a drug-induced heart attack while on a plane, later waking up in hospital.
