Rob Reiner's son Nick arrested following death of parents in apparent homicide

Nick Reiner is now in custody following the tragic deaths of his parents

The son of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele, Nick, has been arrested in wake of their tragic deaths, it has now been confirmed.

The cinematic world has been left stunned by the news that the legendary actor and filmmaker, 78, and his spouse of more than three decades were found dead on Sunday (14 December).

The couple's second oldest child, Nick Reiner, has now been arrested and is in custody, the BBC reported. A statement from the LAPD says that he is 'responsible for their deaths' and remains in custody 'with no bail'.

The 32-year-old was arrested on Sunday, and charged on Monday, according to Los Angeles Sheriff's Department records.

It was widely reported that Nick was being quizzed by cops in wake of his parents passings - which police are treating as an 'apparent homicide' - before the news was then confirmed.

Nick has been charged with a felony level crime, according to the LASD Inmate Information Center, although further details about the cause for the arrest have not been released.

Records state that he was taken into custody at 9.15pm local time on Sunday evening, before he was then charged in the early hours of Monday (15 December) morning.

LADbible has contacted the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for comment.

Police were called to Rob and Michele's Los Angeles home, situated in the affluent area of Brentwood, before finding the bodies of the couple.

A spokesperson for the family confirmed the news of their deaths 'with profound sorrow' in a brief statement, which added: "We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time."

Focus has since fallen on a film that Rob directed, that was written by his son Nick, which delved into their family troubles.

The movie, Being Charlie, is an autobiographical story about Nick’s struggles with drug addiction and homelessness.

The film follows a fictionalised Nick, Rob, and Michele, with Rob playing the character of a celebrity actor who is now running for governor.

Speaking to the LA Times at TIFF, Rob previously revealed how it reflected the goings on in the Reiner household.

Rob said: "When Nick would tell us that it wasn’t working for him, we wouldn’t listen. We were desperate and because the people had diplomas on their wall, we listened to them when we should have been listening to our son."

In the same interview, Michele said: "We were so influenced by these people. They would tell us he’s a liar, that he was trying to manipulate us. And we believed them."

Nick himself also added: “I got sick of it. I got sick of doing that. … I come from a nice family. I’m not supposed to be out there on the streets and in homeless shelters doing all these...things.”

Tributes have been pouring in for The Wolf of Wall Street star Rob and Michele, a producer and photographer who he met on the set of his 1989 film, When Harry Met Sally.

Rob - who welcomed sons Jake and Nick, as well as daughter Romy during their 36-year marriage - previously revealed that their love story inspired him to change the ending of the iconic romcom.

Tributes have been pouring in for the couple, with author and longtime pal Stephen King sharing a poignant post online.

"I’m horrified and saddened by the death of Rob Reiner and Michele," he said in a post on X. "Wonderful friend, political ally, and brilliant filmmaker (including 2 of mine). Rest in peace, Rob. You always stood by me."

California Governor Gavin Newsom said he is 'heartbroken' by the news, adding: "Rob will be remembered for his remarkable filmography and for his extraordinary contribution to humanity.

"Rob was a passionate advocate for children and for civil rights... He made California a better place through his good works."

Meanwhile, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has called the couple's deaths 'devastating'.

"Personally, I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob and his wife Michele," she said.

"Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society... An acclaimed actor, director, producer, writer, and engaged political activist, he always used his gifts in service of others."

US President Donald Trump has come under fire after sharing a bizarre response to the tragic news, as he claimed the film director had a 'raging obsession' with him and said he suffered from 'Trump Derangement Syndrome'.
