The United States fired missiles at parts of Iran overnight according to president Donald Trump.
Iran is currently locked in a war against its Middle Eastern neighbours Israel, while Trump's US forces are backers of the latter, meaning their involvement was always likely as the conflict showed no sign of ceasing.
Trump announced this major news to the world via Truth Social, writing: "We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan. All planes are now outside of Iran air space. A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordo.

"All planes are safely on their way home. Congratulations to our great American Warriors. There is not another military in the World that could have done this. NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE! Thank you for your attention to this matter."
In a subsequent phone interview (via The Mirror), the 79-year-old warned Iran 'should make peace immediately - otherwise they'll get hit again.'

In response to this attack, Iran's foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi labelled it 'outrageous, extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behaviour' in a post on social media.
"The United States, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has committed a grave violation of the UN Charter, international law and the NPT by attacking Iran's peaceful nuclear installations," he tweeted on X.

"The events this morning are outrageous and will have everlasting consequences. Each and every member of the UN must be alarmed over this extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behavior. In accordance with the UN Charter and its provisions allowing a legitimate response in self-defense, Iran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interest, and people."

The British prime minister Keir Starmer also acknowledged the missile strike, which saw submarines unleashing 30 Tomahawk bombs and planes dropping specialised 'bunker busters.'
In a statement, Starmer highlighted how an atomic base embedded 60 metres into a mountain region in Fordo was a 'grave threat to international security.'
"Iran's nuclear programme is a grave threat to international security," the PM said this morning (June 22).

"Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and the US has taken action to alleviate that threat. The situation in the Middle East remains volatile and stability in the region is a priority.
"We call on Iran to return to the negotiating table and reach a diplomatic solution to end this crisis."
Trump's decision to detonate was backed by Reform UK leader Nigel Farage too, who used X to declare: "Iran must not be allowed to have nuclear weapons, the future of Israel depends on it."
Meanwhile, Sky News was informed by business secretary Jonathan Reynolds that the UK was not involved in the attacks, yet was aware that it would be happening.
He went on to add: "We support the prevention of Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon. We had proposed a diplomatic course of action, as other European countries had done. "The Iranians had rejected that. And I know people will be waking up this morning, and they'll be worried. They'll want to know what this means."
