Haunting final moments of woman, 29, who died after falling to death at tourist hotspot
A woman who fell to her death from a cliff over a beach in Indonesia on Saturday (12 September) has been identified as Australian woman Brianna Cronin.
She'd been solo travelling and reached Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida when at around 7:45am local time people on the beach alerted a lifeguard that the 29-year-old woman was stuck on the cliff.
The Nightly reports that the woman was stuck on a ledge below the path after falling by slipping on loose rocks and being unable to pull herself back up again.
Unable to get up onto the path and too high up to get down to the beach, Brianna was stuck and while an emergency response was being organised she fell to her death, with her body found on the beach.
Police confirmed that she was already dead when responders reached her, with a medical examination confirming that she had sustained multiple fractures.
According to information from the field, the victim is estimated to have fallen around 9am," Cakra Negara, Nusa Penida's alert unit coordinator said.
"At that time, the victim was looking for an independent route to the edge of the cliff before slipping and falling into the ravine."
Plans to evacuate her remains by boat were stopped by the tides so responders put her on a stretcher and carried her up a cliffside trail for an hour-and-a-half.
Members of the public also helped move Brianna's body off the beach.
She was an ecologist from Queensland and the Australian state's premier David Crisafulli expressed sorrow at her death in a statement released yesterday.
"A young woman on the trip of a lifetime, active, enjoying herself, and to have her life taken away in a heartbeat like that, it's just incredibly, incredibly sad," he said.
"I just express my sympathies to her family and those loved ones with her and back at home. I think all of Queensland collectively looks at that and just feels it, wakes up to just a huge degree of sorrow."
“We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time," a spokesperson for Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said.
Kelingking Beach is located around 20km south-east of Bali and is sometimes referred to as T-Rex Bay due to the shape of the cliffs surrounding it.
It's one of the area's most popular tourist destinations, though swimming in the water is banned due to dangerous currents and the trail that leads down to the beach is considered a difficult hike.
Proposals to build a glass lift that would have taken people up and down the cliff stopped after opposition from locals, with part of the frame built into the cliff.
