Girl, 4, left orphaned after parents die in scalding hotel bathtub

The couple's bodies were found in a motel room the day after celebrating her birthday

Two parents have been found dead in a motel bathtub the day after celebrating their daughter's birthday.

The couple, Jeferson Luiz Sagaz, 37, and his partner Ana Carolina Silva, 41, were discovered in the boiling tub the day after they had gone to a nightclub.

They had spent the previous day at a food park for their four-year-old's birthday before going on a night out, leaving their child with Sagaz's sister before checking into the Dallas Motel located in São José, Brazil, after midnight on 11 August.

Sagaz and Silva were meant to pick their daughter up in the morning, but they never showed up, prompting family to call authorities.

Police investigated their disappearance and stumbled upon their corpses in the motel room they'd checked into.

After analysing CCTV footage and going through their car, it was found by investigators that the parents had passed out in a bathtub that was filled with 50°C water.

As well as this, a space heater was blasting heat into the room.

Following a toxicology examination, high alcohol levels and traces of cocaine were found in their bloodstreams, report Globo G1, as Brazilian Chief Medical Examiner Andressa Boer Fronza stated: “The cause of both deaths was exogenous poisoning, favouring the process of heatstroke with intense dehydration, thermal collapse, culminating in organ failure and death.

"In other words, this death occurred due to multifactorial conditions."

After 16 forensic tests were carried out to rule out possible causes of death such as drowning, carbon monoxide, foul play, or electric shock, it was concluded that heat was the cause of their untimely deaths.

Sagaz and Silva had been together for almost 20 years, while being described as devoted parents and sociable by friends.

Police said there was no history of violence, while Silva's family claimed she was not a common drug user, suggesting she may have been forced to use cocaine.

“It may be that the physical constitution, both his and hers, were not compatible with the use of a substance like that, especially when combined with alcohol,” Chief Simão added.

He added: "The big issue raised in the statements we took, talking to people involved in this, is that they did not have the habit of using cocaine."

Silva owned a nail salon and Sagaz worked at the Trindade Military Police Academy in Florianópolis, according to the Brazilian outlet.

Following the horrific deaths, the couple's daughter is now in the care of relatives after she was left orphaned.
