Woman dies after man falls on top of her from 12-storey building while he survives

A man fell from a 12-storey apartment block in the Sakae district in Japan in the early hours of Sunday evening (19 July).

The 29-year-old male, identified as Shinsei Taguchi, landed on 23-year-old female Houra Inaba, who was stood on the sidewalk in Nagoya.

Police responded to a call from Inaba’s friend at around 1am, as both Taguchi and Inaba were taken to hospital.

Aichi Prefectural Police Headquarters was told that ‘a person fell from above and hit a pedestrian’, as officials are still investigating the incident.

Inaba’s cause of death wasn’t from the incident itself, as she passed away from hemorrhagic shock four-and-a-half hours later.

According to Kyodo News and The Mainichi, Taguchi remains ‘unconscious and in critical condition’. Circumstances around the fall and what floor he fell from are currently unclear.

Footage shared by the All-Nippon News Network shows an officer in front of an area that has been sectioned off with police tape and traffic cones.

Additional clips shared by the Japanese network also show a heeled shoe on the sidewalk.

Kyodo News referred to Nagoya’s Sakae district as ‘a busy area with many stores and entertainment facilities’, while The Mainichi said the site is ‘crowded with office and apartment buildings’.

Such an incident was previously reported in Japan in August 2024 when a 17-year-old high school student fell from a commercial building in Tokyo.

The fall resulted in her death and killed a 32-year-old female pedestrian walking on the street below.

In October 2020 in Osaka, a 17-year-old high school boy reportedly jumped from a high building.

He struck a 19-year-old female university student passing by, resulting in fatal injuries for both individuals.
