Iran World Cup tensions heighten with 24-hour 'ban' and national team members denied entry to US

The fans have also been told they cannot attend

Unfortunately it's not always possible to keep politics out of sport, particularly when two competing countries at the World Cup are currently at war with each other.

It's long been earmarked that there were going to be problems between the US and Iran even before Donald Trump launched strikes against the Middle Eastern country this year.

Iran, after all, featured on the president's controversial travel ban list, with Haiti also present as they prepare for their first ever World Cup.

While most football fans would have been hoping that the focus would have been on the pitch, it's difficult to ignore the controversies that have been going on in the build-up, as we prepare for next Thursday's opening game.

Although Iranian players will naturally be handed a special visa to ensure they can play, it seems as if Iranian fans and officials won't get the same treatment, and will be forced to watch the World Cup from home.

Fans might well be relieved given the price of tickets and beverages inside the US stadiums but officials, who boycotted the bizarre draw at the end of last year, will no doubt be furious to be told that they cannot attend.

Support staff including the Iranian football federation chief Mehdi Taj have all been left out, with a a US state department official confirming that all 'necessary' visas have been issued.

The official added: “We will not allow the Iranian team to abuse this system to sneak terrorists into the United States under false pretences.”

However, the Iranian embassy claimed in its statement that visas were denied to a 'large portion of the managerial and executive staff, technical advisers, and others who are an integral part of any national football team'.

“You have now escalated the deliberate and discriminatory treatment against Iran’s national football team to its highest level,” the embassy’s statement continued. “The US government in practice is depriving Iran’s national team of its right to play in the World Cup under normal conditions and without undue pressure and stress.”

Considering some of Trump's comments about Iran over the past few months, as the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz continues to cause havoc for the rest of the world, it's perhaps no surprise that this war has spilled over into the World Cup proceedings.

And unfortunately for the Middle Eastern players, it seems as if the US are keen to ensure that their stay at the World Cup is a short one, as their preparations will be affected by allegedly only being allowed to travel in and out of the US on a match day.

"We can enter in the morning and we must leave the same day,” Ambassador Abolfazl Pasandideh told reporters, citing visa restrictions.

All three of Iran's group stage matches are scheduled in the US, so it seems as if Trump is attempting to get the upper hand in the war by any means necessary, as he looks to spoil their chances of progression.
