Spanish National Football team account makes awkward Donald Trump move

If there’s one thing you don’t want spoiling your big moment, especially when you’ve just won the 2026 World Cup, it’s a Donald Trump photobomb.

There were awkward scenes on Sunday night (19 July) as the US president handed out medals and the winners’ trophy to victors Spain, but none more so than when the team celebrated their win - and Trump hung around on the periphery.

Security was increased around the MetLife Stadium as the 80-year-old attended Sunday’s finale, which saw Argentina suffer a loss sealed by super sub Ferran Torres’ strike in the 106th minute.

After Spanish skipper Rodri was handed the trophy by Trump after the 1-0 extra time win against Argentina, the Manchester City midfielder appeared to gently direct him away to the side of the stage, where he was still in shot as the team lifted the prize.

Following the win, shots posted on the official Instagram page of the Spanish team are Trump-free - despite him being on the sidelines when the moment happened.

Fans were quick to notice the exclusion, with one writing on X: “Spain officially edited grandpa out of the trophy presentation.”

But many also pointed out on X and other social media platforms that the pictures sans the president are just ones taken when he had in fact moved over to the side of the stage, because he did end up making a hasty exit as celebrations got into full swing on the pitch.

The Sporting News also reports that an Australian broadcaster could he heard quipping: “They can edit him out of that,” as the moment unfolded.

There was heartbreak for Argentina following their loss, especially given it could turn out to be Lionel Messi’s final appearance on what is considered to be football’s biggest stage.

Boss Lionel Scaloni became emotional as he spoke after the game, saying: “I feel sadness but knowing that we left everything out there. I have a lot of things to say about how we got here, but it’s not worth it.

“I want to thank these guys eternally for giving us another World Cup final and for competing until the end. They were better, that’s the truth.

“But I’ll hold on to an enormous memory of what they have done, of what it’s worth to get this far. We have to give it huge validity because it takes a lot to get here.”

He broke down in tears before leaving the post-match press conference early, saying: “I have to be honest and say that I have to take time and think about the future. Because I’m not sure this can be achieved again.”

He said of Messi: “He is 39 years old, it is unbelievable. It was always crystal clear to me that he would play until he chose to stop and that everyone would support him.

“I hope everyone is proud of him, because he is the best football player ever to set foot on a pitch.”

Spain now become the first nation to hold the men’s and women’s World Cup titles simultaneously.
