A true innovator.

Late pop singer George Michael wasn't just the genius of writing some of the biggest hits and albums in music history; he was also partly responsible for the beginning of James Corden's popular Carpool Karaoke series.

Earlier this year, while visiting Howard Stern's SiriusXM radio show, The Late Late Show host Corden told how Carpool Karaoke came to be and how it was partly inspired by an old Comic Relief skit he did with George.

In the clip, recorded in 2011, Corden and the former Wham! star rock out while driving and singing along to the song 'I'm Your Man'.

The clip begins with Corden reprising his Gavin and Stacey character, Smithy, as he drives around in an old Volvo. He then picks up George - who is also dressed as Smithy - and you have yourself the first ever Carpool Karaoke.

Sadly, George passed away aged 53 yesterday from a suspected heart failure.

In a statement, the musician's publicist said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period.

"The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage."

RIP; he was not just a musician but a true innovator.
