'Oblivious' Elderly Woman Spotted Driving '16 Miles With No Tyre'

'Oblivious' Elderly Woman Spotted Driving '16 Miles With No Tyre'

Awkward.

Sometimes a driver might forget to indicate or have their high-beams on. But I highly doubt any of us would forget that we're completely missing a tyre.

But that's what Yacine Chikh spotted when he noticed another motorist driving on the A64 on the way to Knaresborough, North Yorkshire in England.

Yacine says the 'oblivious old woman driver' was getting up to speeds of around 40 mph at some points.

That sound is worse than nails on a chalkboard.

Yacine has told The Metro: "The noise was just crazy. It was nuts. We thought it was both funny and sad. She could have injured somebody. You can drive with a flat tyre until it has completely evaporated but I would say that she shouldn't be on the road at all."

Yacine says he tried on several occasions to get the woman to pull over but he got no reaction from her. He was told that a friend spotted her driving near a Sainsbury's supermarket 16 miles away.

A police spokesperson said: "Police received a call from a member of the public shortly before 5pm on Monday 5th June, reporting that an elderly woman was driving a grey Ford Fiesta with a tyre missing on one of the wheels.

"The car was being driven along at the A64 Eastbound approaching Bilbrough services. The vehicle registration mark was not obtained and officers, despite concerted efforts, were not able to locate the vehicle."

Goodyear Tyres has said: "Driving on a flat tyre can cause internal structural damage to the tyre, may lead to wheel and vehicle damage, and may result in poor vehicle handling and control - which could lead to an accident, injury or death."

But this woman didn't even have a tyre, so I can only imagine the damage that was done to that car.

Autoguide explains: "If a tyre degrades enough when being driven while flat, it can start to break apart and cause damage to several important components on a car. Brake lines, rotors, callipers, suspension components, wheels and fenders."

The mishap is reminiscent of when an English grandma accidentally drove 300 miles when she missed a turn-off. Valerie Johnson's trip should have only taken 10 minutes, but instead she was on the road for eight hours.

Apparently, she didn't realise how much time had passed but she didn't stop driving until 12:40am.

Her adventure only came to a standstill when she ran out of petrol but her family had already reported her missing. A couple in Larkhall noticed her car outside and had become concerned. They went over and invited Valerie into their home, where she stayed for the night.
