To have a smartphone is to break a smartphone. We've all done it. Whether you've woken up after a night out and found the screen cracked, dropped it in the bath or, actually, done nothing but it's just broken anyway, this story will perplex you.
They're flimsy. They're not built to last. My mate dropped it from his pocket into the toilet once and it was absolutely goosed. He tried the rice trick, but it was gone forever.
However, Michael Guntrum, from Pennsylvania, has quite a story. Back in March last year he was out ice fishing when he dropped his phone into the lake. Gutted.
Although he was a bit upset at the scenario, he did at least catch a fish and he accepted he wasn't getting the phone back and that was that, or so he thought.

But then in September last year the lake was drained and mechanical engineer Daniel Kalgren was going over the empty waterbed with his metal detector. He found the iPhone 4 under "six inches of mud and clay", according to Buzzfeed.

Daniel decided to put the phone in rice to try and dry it out. And it worked. It actually turned on and the phone is still going strong, or so Daniel says. He was then able to reunite it with its owner, who has since said he's going to give the phone a makeover and give it to his mum. Aw.
The phone did have some help, though, as Daniel was quick to point out it had been kept in an OtterBox case, which obviously offers some sort of magical protection.
