Yesterday (5 March), Trafford Council unanimously approved plans for a huge indoor tropical spa - complete with water slides and indoor and outdoor pools - to be built in Manchester at a cost of £250 million ($192m).

Located between Phoenix Way, Mercury Way and the Bridgewater Canal, the epic tropical spa will feature a wealth of exciting facilities, including a large family zone with waterslides, a wave pool, indoor and outdoor pools, steam rooms, exotic palm tree relaxation areas, luxury spa experiences and a two acre - two acre! - well-being garden.

There will also be a dedicated adults' area, which will boast botanical gardens featuring warm-water lagoons, swim-up bars - count us in! - therapeutic mineral baths, steam rooms and saunas.

As if that wasn't enough, there will be places for activities like yoga and pilates and, after your hard day of being pampered, a number of restaurants and bars. And yes, there's also going to be parking onsite.

When Therme Manchester first announced the proposals in July 2019, CEO of Therme Group UK, Stelian Iacob, said: "Therme combines sustainable technology with nature and culture to benefit communities around the world.

"Manchester has always been a forward-thinking city, and we are excited about the possibility of Therme Manchester bringing well-being and affordable luxury to the heart of the community, shaping a city of the future."

The idea, according to the company, is to bring together 'the tradition of the ancient Roman spa with an indoor tropical paradise' to make the centre one of the first if its kind in the UK.

At last night's planning committee meeting, a representative from Therme Manchester said: "This is a £250 million investment in Trafford. It will improve physical and mental wellbeing for the whole community."

The three-story Therme Manchester and Peel L&P well-being resort will be built on Barton Dock Road and will replace the current EventCity events building in Trafford Park, which is in the process of being relocated to the old site of Soccerdome.

Not a single resident objected to the plans. Building on the project is expected to begin imminently, and it should be open in 2023. Within five years it's forecast to attract up to two million visitors per year, which would make it the most visited water-based attraction in Europe.
