Harry Kane has thanked England's football fans for their support after the team was knocked out of the World Cup with a loss against France.

England played their final match in Qatar last night (10 December), when the team lost 2-1 to France in the quarter finals of the ongoing event.

Following the loss, team captain Kane took to Twitter to admit he was 'absolutely gutted' at the result and at the end of England's time in the World Cup.

Kane went on to take responsibility for 'a small detail' which led to the loss, seemingly in reference to his late penalty miss which could have taken the game into extra time.

The captain kicked the ball high over the bar with just six minutes to play, leaving him looking devastated before the final whistle blew.

In the post, he continued: "We’ve given it everything and it’s come down to a small detail which I take responsibility for. There’s no hiding from it, it hurts and it’ll take some time to get over it but that’s part of sport."

"Now it’s about using the experience to be mentally and physically stronger for the next challenge," Kane continued in another post.

"Thanks for all the support throughout the tournament - it means a lot."

Kane did score one goal in the game, bringing England equal with France as he nailed a penalty into the net, but France brought it back with another goal in the second half.

Manager Gareth Southgate commented on Kane's missed penalty in an interview with ITV after the game came to an end, saying: “For me, we win and lose as a team. We’ve let a couple of goals in, and missed a few chances. So he’s been incredible for us, so reliable in those sort of situations. We wouldn’t be here but for the number of goals he’s scored for us.”

Kane also received support from fans after sharing his tweet, with one responding to describe him as a 'phenomenal player'.

They wrote: "Well played Harry great tournament. Your [sic] a great human and phenomenal player. Unlucky last night. Great match."

Southgate revealed that he told the England players they couldn't 'have given any more', adding: "I think they played really well against a top team."

Following their win over England, France are now set to continue their World Cup journey as they face Morocco on Wednesday evening (14 December).
