Rugby league player Jack Johnson has revealed he’s found the funny side of his horrifying training accident which caused his testicle to explode.

The Newcastle Thunder star joked that it’s been a ‘testy' time after undergoing surgery to remove his left testicle following a freak accident during training that he termed 'a knee to the ball'.

Taking to Twitter last week, the winger shared a selfie of himself in hospital as he told fans about the injury, which can only be described as every man’s worst nightmare.

Writing alongside the photo, he penned: "What a load of BOLLOCKS. Not my greatest Thursday ever, with the old testicle exploding at training. Had it removed last night.

"Will be back soon just a little bit lighter, and as the saying goes RL (rugby league) wins again. P.S. does the swelling stay? Asking for a friend."

Although his recovery means he’s out for the rest of the season, Johnson showed that he has found the punny side to his horrific accident in a new interview ahead of his team’s game against York City.

Appearing for a pre-game interview with Premier Sports TV, the sports star was asked if he could elaborate on his injury when he delivered several top tier puns.

"I had a freak injury at training, I've ended up losing one of my testicles and it was actually my favourite one, my left one,” he began. "Unfortunately, I've just took a knee to the ball and yeah, the rest is history."

When asked to sum up his team’s season so far, Johnson – with a glint in his eye – responded: "You know what it's been a testy one for us, not going to lie.

"We've not been on the ball as we should have been at all times."

After being asked when fans will next see him on the pitch, the player admitted it won’t be this season and even took a hilarious swipe at coach Denis Betts.

He shared: “I'm probably out for the season now. I mean Denis [Betts] has tried telling me from when he had a similar issue, but it was more of a vasectomy that he was training the next day.

“So, Denis if you're listening, I won't be training this week or any time soon. And it probably was a bit worse than what happened to you.”

After the chat was shared on social media, fans couldn’t help but commend Johnson on his punny skills and recovery.

One wrote on Twitter: “@JackkJohnsonn you really are a star, and well done for how you are dealing with it. Tell Denis back off unless it was same issue”.

“Put your feet up Jack & watch ‘Womble of Wimbledon’,” another said, while a third penned: "Brilliant" alongside several laughing face-emojis.

A fourth even suggested he take over the team’s official social media: “Think @ThunderRugby should let JJ do a Twitter takeover for a match!”

Johnson has played 24 matches on the wing for the Thunder in the Betfred Championship - the second-tier below Super League.
