Getting shouted at. Polishing your boots. Crawling around in the mud. This montage has been in every Army related film we can think of. But if this is all you picture when you think about life in The Army, prepare to be surprised. Because we've just found a list of roles in The Army that have genuinely amazed us. For example, did you know you could be a bricklayer in The Army?! No, us neither!

In fact, The Army has loads of diverse and interesting roles suitable to all different types of people. And there are so many unique experiences to have in The Army. Here are 10 of the most surprising roles you can do in The Army…

1) Army Musician

Army musicians are paid to perform at famous, high-profile events in the UK and all over the world, playing everything from military marching music to jazz and contemporary. If you love music and travelling to exciting places, this could be the role for you!

2) Painting & Plastering

One day you could be putting the finishing touches to a hospital, the next, fixing up the military base. And this could be anywhere in the world. Not many painters and decorators get to travel so much!

3) Plumber

We’re not sure why this one surprised us, after all every building needs heating and plumbing! Plus it’s a great trade to know if you ever leave the forces.

4) Chef

Feeding The Army is a big job but it’s more than just serving up breakfast to soldiers. Army Chefs are in charge of delivering the best experience to their units; from state banquets and fine dining to supporting humanitarian and disaster intervention across the world.

5) Mental Health Nurse

We love this one. It goes without saying that there are roles within The Army that are particularly stressful and so there are mental health nurses on hand to keep soldiers and their families fit and healthy throughout their time in service.

6) Teacher

It makes sense that those in The Army need continuous training so they have Educational & Training Services (ETS) Officers to teach soldiers and officers valuable skills, ranging from coaching and cultural awareness to international relations.

7) Petroleum Operator

There are literally people in The Army who are experts in fuel! Their job is to make sure military tanks, helicopters and sea vessels get to where they’re going.

8) Postal Operator

The Army has a team of postmen and women whose job it is to ensure the British forces receive their mail no matter where they are deployed in the world!

9) Vet

From horses to dogs, the Army has hundreds of animals in its ranks so it makes sense that they need people to keep them healthy and take care of them when they’re ill or injured. But they also advise on things like disease controls and biosecurity!

10) Adventurous Training

This isn’t a role exactly but it’s training you can do no matter what your job is. And it sounds amazing. Adventurous Training is designed to develop your existing skills or teach you something completely new and as the name suggests - it’s all pretty adventure based. You can learn everything from mountain biking, canoeing and paragliding, to caving, sailing and diving. They’re actually big on sport in general. The Army encourages soldiers and officers to take part in sporting activities; whether that's simply playing for a regiment or going as far as representing the country at an elite level.
