Students Refuse To Pay Rent In London Due To Ludicrously High Prices

Students Refuse To Pay Rent In London Due To Ludicrously High Prices

Good on them!

In a huge two fingers up at landlords, London students are taking a stand against sky-high rent and simply refusing to pay.

The average expected debt of a student is now at a huge £44,000 when they leave university, and that's not including the cost of rent and living.

There have been widely-publicised social media campaigns from students at UCL, Goldsmiths and University of the Arts London but none quite so drastic as the latest.

UCLU Halls Accommodation Rep Angus O'Brien told Dazed and Confused: "The only way to make UCL listen to our concerns is by taking radical action. The students striking now will force the university to deal with its unsustainable and unfair rent setting policy, this is the only option we are now left with in the campaign for affordable accommodation here."

So far 500 students are protesting for the 'Cut The Rent' campaign but UCL have so far responded by claiming the rents of up to £209.79 per week are simply 'a fact of life'.

At Goldsmiths, 130 students are now striking, demanding that their rent is cut to 50% of their maintenance grant.

It is thought more than £1 million worth of rent is being withheld by students as they protest the outrageous costs to study in the capital city.

This is certainly an argument everyone can get behind. Rent is a joke in London for people who have full time jobs, let alone students trying to make a future for themselves.
