Couple slammed for charging wedding guests nearly £2,000 leaving people gobsmacked at what's included

A friend of a guest took to Reddit to explain the ordeal

Attending a wedding usually racks up a bit of money - just think outfit, travel, drinks and accommodation costs - but one couple requested almost £2,000 from their guests to simply show up.

OK, we get it, weddings are expensive, but isn’t that something the bride and groom should plan to come out of their own pockets through a few years of saving?

Apparently not.

A user on Reddit shocked social media users with their story of their friend, Jack - whose name has been changed for anonymity - who had RSVP’d to attend his mate’s wedding.

The couple, called Sophie and Jeff - whose names have also been changed to protect their identity - thanked him for his confirmation and sent out a email.

Except this wasn’t a normal 'thank you' email; it was a payment request link.

While Jack first thought it was a honeymoon fund link for voluntary contributions, he soon found out days later when curiosity got the better of him that it was apparently to pay the couple ‘just shy’ of two grand.

At first, he thought it was a scam so rang the venue, only to be told that ‘Sophie and Jeff thank you for your contribution to enabling them to have their dream wedding’.

Because he was so close with Jeff, Jack did go on to drain his savings account with the aim of grabbing the most expensive drinks and food while at the event to gather back some money lost.

But that’s when he found out that drinks were not free, and he had to pay a mandatory £200 tip to the venue that was apparently imposed by the bride and groom.

The Redditor said: "He was then informed by the venue that the bride and groom had requested every guest be charged this amount as a tip for the venue. Note this is in the UK where tipping the venue is not a thing that happens. Jack had no money left from rinsing his savings for the wedding that he had to negotiate a lower tip amount with the venue.

"After the wedding, Jack checked the cost of the venue and calculated that the cost had been spread amongst the guests but NOT the bride and groom, so they had basically got a free wedding out of it.

"Not only did the bride and groom pass on the costs of a ridiculously priced venue to the guests, after people had RSVP'd, essentially putting the venue above guest attendance, but then they passed on the cost of a tip to the guests WITHOUT TELLING THEM, as a required charge on check out.

"I've never heard of anything so entitled in my life."

Reddit users were quick to share their thoughts in the comments.

One person wrote: “I don't think tacky really covers this, I'm thinking ‘skeevy’.”

Another said: "I would not have gone. That's outrageous."

While a third questioned: "What is wrong with people?"

And someone else suggested: "I would get in touch with the bride and groom and ask for a refund."
