A man has been heaped with praise after he bought a stolen £1,300 ($1,696) bike for £80 ($104) so he could return it to its rightful owner.

Ste Burke, from Liverpool, UK, bought the bike for the knock-down price, recognising that it was worth much, much more.

Ste shared a picture of the bike on Twitter in the hope of finding its rightful owner.

He then shared a picture of his purchase on Twitter yesterday (Monday) along with the caption: "Has anyone had their bike stolen? Just bought this for £80 and it's got a bike lock on it.

"Apparently it's from the Crosby area. Bought it so I can get it to back to the right owner.

"I know it's a £1,350 bike and I'd be heartbroken if it was me. Give us a shout."

Social media was then at its magical best, and with the help of thousands of comments and retweets, the bike's true owner was tracked down.

Sharing the good news, Ste said: "Was messaged on here by someone and it ended up being the fellas who's bike it was.

"He had the key to the bike lock and all the paperwork to go with it. Ended up being from dovecot.

"Said his house got had off two days ago and he'd saved up and spent £1,250 on the bike last year.

"Said his house has been had off but he's made up that he's managed to get his bike back, so happy days. It's in the right hands now."

Ste has since been showered with praise - and rightly so.

Stormzy was among those to commend Ste, labelling him a 'top man'.

Actor Ralf Little also said: "What an absolute mint thing to do and top bloke."

As if his deeds weren't admirable enough, Ste said he also told owner of the bike that he didn't want the £80 back.

Speaking to the Metro, he said: "He thanked me as his home was recently burgled and it's a bit of good news for him through the hard time he's going through.

"He told me he got paid on Friday and could he send me the money then and I said no. I told him I didn't feel right taking money off a man who has just had his house burgled."

It looks like Ste won't come out of this with nothing though, no matter how magnanimous he wants to be, as Halfords has offered to give him a bike.

No less than the LAD deserves.
