Doctor Asks His Girlfriend To Pay Half His Mortgage After Learning Her Salary

A woman has shared her story online after her boyfriend supposedly asked her to pay for half of his mortgage when she revealed her salary to him.

The woman revealed that her boyfriend, a doctor who she is set to move in with, found out that she was earning more than him and asked her to pay for half the monthly mortgage, despite the fact that she wouldn’t be on the documentation of the house and would essentially be left with nothing should the pair separate.

The 23-year-old said that she’s been in a relationship with the 29-year-old medical professional for 18 months, and she’s now decided to move in with him.

Sharing her story on Reddit’s ‘Am I The A**hole’ thread, she said: “He’s a doctor and I’m a social media manager. He told me how much he makes and it was more or less what I expected.”

That’s when things got awkward, because it turned out she earns significantly more than him.

In fact, she earns 150 percent of his salary.

The woman continued: "Once the initial shock wore off, he said that’s great, because now I can pay half of his mortgage.

"I was a little taken aback by that. I mean, it’s not like I wasn’t going to contribute to the household at all. I would’ve been happy to buy groceries, pay utilities and cook and clean because my workload is much lighter than his. I told him this and that I wouldn’t pay half his mortgage."

Now, this is an issue because half of the mortgage would be three times what she pays in rent at the minute.

"I told him that that’s a little unfair because if we break up, he gets a house and I’m left with nothing, and that if that’s going to be the case I would rather stay in my apartment," she explained.

"His house is sparsely decorated to say the least. He has two one-seat couches, a table that’s too big and a TV that’s too small. Oh, and a bed.

She seemed to be questioning her decision to move in with him.

"I told him that I would furnish the entire house and get the groceries, cook and clean, and we’d go half on utilities. But he still insisted that I pay half of the mortgage."

When that compromise fell through, she asked the internet for help and assurance to which most of those who’ve seen her post took her side.

One said: "Your boyfriend isn’t even interested in figuring out what your reasonable portion of rent would be. He just wants to cash in on your help. He sounds entitled."

Another wrote: "She just wants to live with her partner, but he comes with this expensive house she didn't pick and doesn't want to pay for.

"Even if she makes more she is allowed to say 'that is too expensive for me, I would rather stay in my apartment and put that money in my savings'."

However, not everyone agreed.

One commented: "She should pay rent. It’s fair to pay half and half."

Another said: "You're expecting to live rent free. Call it rent, call it mortgage. Doesn't have to be half the mortgage, but an amount for rent is totally reasonable for him to expect."
