Groom late for own wedding after police caught his 120mph BMW speeding to church

Groom late for own wedding after police caught his 120mph BMW speeding to church

The groom would have had a lot of explaining to do when he was reunited with his fiancée

If there's one event you don't want to be late for, it's your own wedding. But unfortunately one man's efforts to get there on time only ended up making him more late as he was caught speeding by police.

The groom - who police decided not to name and shame - was spotted zooming down the M4 yesterday (11 June) and reaching very illegal speeds as he attempted to make it to his bride.

Obviously, we wouldn't want the bride to think she'd been left at the altar, but a quick phone call definitely would have been a safer way to clear things up, with no broken hearts or increased risk of car accidents.

Instead, however, the groom hopped in his BMW and put the pedal to the metal, taking the car to speeds higher than 120mph.

If you're unaware, the speed limit on motorways is usually 70mph, meaning the driver was going at least 50mph faster than they should have been.

The M4 has also recently been subject to reduced speed limits while Highways England conducted worked to convert stretches of it into a smart motorway, restricting drivers to 50mph or 60mph.

A picture of the speed radar gun used on the BMW was shared on Twitter by Specialist Operations at Wiltshire Police and shows a reading of 121mph, so naturally officers hit the sirens and began pursuing the BMW.

The driver had to appear in court after being stopped.

When the groom stopped, police found that the speed wasn't the only issue with the car.

In the post, Wiltshire Police wrote: "Usually, the bride is always late. Unfortunately, this groom has some explaining to do after being caught at 121 mph on the M4 on the way to his wedding.

"A read nearside tyre with cord exposed topped this stop off."

Police shared a picture of the tyre along with a snap of the patrol car hovering next to the silvery-blue BMW, and explained that the driver had to report to court after being stopped.

Not only that, but their vehicle was also prohibited as a result of the faults, meaning the groom wasn't allowed to drive it on the road any more due to it being in a 'dangerous condition'.

It's unclear exactly how the groom attempted to explain this to the bride, or whether he made it to the wedding at all, but it's safe to say that his speeding definitely did not help to get him to the church on time.
