A UK Ski Centre Has Closed Because There's Too Much Snow

The ski centre says the amount of snow has caused a health hazard and could prevent emergency services from getting in

You'd think on a week like this one, ski centres would be absolutely bursting at the seams with excitement and customers.

There's no denying that virtually all of the UK has been blanketed in snow, with some areas expected to get up 40 centimetres when the 'Beast from the East' is done with us.

But strangely, the Chatham Ski Centre in Gillingham, Medway, has closed because...there's too much snow.

They've uploaded a picture to their Facebook page, showing a hill well covered in white, which you'd think would be the best thing on the planet for a business that focuses on people skiing. But the snow from the storm has become so severe that they've had to close down.

"Centre currently closed as we have an inaccessible car park and we have to be able to have emergency vehicle access and staff are struggling to get to site," the page says. "We are cancelling lessons for today and will reschedule."

People on social media thought the situation was quite ironic.

But Chatham Ski Centre General Manager Andy has elaborated on the situation, saying: "We did have someone unfortunately have a broken femur a few years back in similar conditions. It was just one of those things, as he fell awkwardly.

"Getting an ambulance down Capstone road wouldn't have been possible today as it really only 4x4's that could get up and down the road it was that bad. Getting them then into the car park wouldn't have been feasible.

"We would love to be open taking money, though snowy days, from experience, are not very much at all as very few venture out."

The Met Office has officially issued a 'Red Warning' for parts of Scotland, with fears that roads and whole communities will be cut off as the storm sweeps through.

In a statement, the weather forecaster says: "Snow showers already affecting the area will become heavier and more prolonged later on Wednesday afternoon and at times through the evening and overnight period, with 5 cm of snow falling within an hour in some places and lying snow reaching 20-30 cm and possibly 40 cm in a few places by mid-morning on Thursday."

The wind chill factor is also forecast to make it feel much colder than what the mercury says.

Because the UK is just the epicentre of great weather, once the 'Beast from the East' settles down, Britain is set to get battered again by Storm Emma. That lovely weather pattern will be bringing us blizzards, gales and sleet from Thursday, but we'll be used to it by then, I guess.
