Shoppers surprised by what's inside Cadbury Creme Egg 'goo' now they're back in supermarkets

The eggs are back in abundance in time for Easter

Christmas is behind us, so you know what that means - supermarket shelves are now filling up for the next holidays, with Easter officially on its way.

It's eggcellent news for everyone who loves eating chocolate eggs beyond the designated weekend, so with selection boxes out of the way we can now officially start stocking up on Easter Eggs, Mini Eggs and, of course, Creme Eggs.

The rich, faux-yolk-filled treats are a favourite for many Cadbury fans, and they can be so delicious that they almost distract entirely completely from the question of what you're actually eating.

Almost - but not quite. You see, despite the fact that Creme Eggs have been available for years now, not everyone is clued up about what's actually inside them.

It's not chocolate, and it's obviously not just egg, so what is it?

Many people took to social media to raise the question, with one person asking: "I have a huge problem weighing on my mind: What is the substance in the middle of a Creme Egg called? What is it? A goo?"

Another wrote: "What’s like actually goin on inside a Cadbury creme egg?"

While it technically is a goo - and a very gooey goo, at that - Cadbury couldn't get away with listing that amid the ingredients.

Instead, the chocolate company explains that the centre of a Creme Egg is actually made up of fondant, consisting of sugar, milk, glucose syrup, cocoa butter, inverted sugar syrup, dried whey, vegetable fats and dried egg white.

So there is some egg in there, after all!

Despite the fact some people are only just learning about what's inside a Creme Egg, the lack of knowledge obviously hasn't put anyone off as Cadbury's produces a staggering 500 million eggs each year. And I only eat about half of those.

Creme Eggs have a strong fan base.

The chocolate treats first appeared in stores in 1971 and have been a favoured Easter treat since - though, like with any food, there are some haters who find the treats too much.

After watching a TikTok about the makeup of the eggs, one person wrote: "Am I the only one who doesn’t like the filling?"

The chocolate will always have its supporters, though, with one fan taking to Twitter to claim that 'people who don’t like creme egg are attention seekers'.

But whether you're for or against the chocolate and fondant combo, just know that Creme Egg time is coming, and there's nothing you can do to stop it.
