Beetlejuice 2 finally gets a release date and Jenna Ortega is officially on board

Beetlejuice fans have finally been given the news they've been desperately waiting for.

The original dropped in cinemas around the world all the way back in 1988.

The characters and story have been dormant ever since and fans have been begging for a sequel.

After many rumours and a lot of speculation in Tinseltown, we now know when the follow-up will land.

Warner Bros. has earmarked the sequel for 6 September 2024.

That's a casual 485 days from now, which is certainly not a date you want to hold your breath for.

But at least we can launch an official countdown.

That release date coincides with Marvel dropping its highly anticipated Blade movie, so there could be a bit of cinematic competition next year.

However, the release date wasn't the only bit of news about Beetlejuice.

The movie studio has confirmed Jenna Ortega will be joining the cast as Lydia's daughter.

Lydia was played by Winona Ryder and she is rumoured to be returning for the sequel; as is Michael Keaton.

There's not much else that's known about the plot of the follow-up.

The original movie also starred Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Jones.

It focuses on a family that moves into a home in New York City after the previous owners die in a car accident.

The couple who die find themselves confined to the home they once lived in for 125 years 'on pain of a dire fate'.

However, if they want to live in it in peace then they are told to scare the new owners away.

They contact Beetlejuice (played by Michael Keaton), who is a ghost from the Netherworld and he promises to help them get ride of the living family.

What ensues is a hilarious comedy that has been beloved by audiences around the world for decades.

It's fitting to have Jenna Ortega in the sequel considering she's the world's favourite goth girl following the success of Netflix's Wednesday series.

She would serve as the perfect daughter to Ryder's Lydia, who played a goth teenager in the original film.

When director Tim Burton was asked by Deadline last year about the chance for a Beetlejuice 2, the director said 'nothing is out of the question'.

"I only know if I'm making a film when I'm actually on the set shooting," Burton said of the sequel to his 1988 cult classic that also starred Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis.

"I try to go back to the root of everything. It springs from a seed and then it grows, rather than out of these statements.

"I am working on ideas and things but it's all very early days. We'll set how it goes. How's that for a non-answer?"
