The dust has barely settled on the release of Tom Hardy's latest film, Dunkirk, but eyes are already averting to his 2018 project.

The British actor will, firstly, have a cameo role in the next Star Wars film, The Last Jedi, but his next major part will be as the title character in Venom - a Spiderman spin-off.

Hardy will play Eddie Brock, or Venom, a freelance photographer who becomes infected by an alien lifeform and turns into a half-human, half-alien villain. Spiderman will be his main target.

But we've known that Hardy will be part of the Marvel Universe since May, although very little has been revealed.

Now, it's rumoured heavily that Riz Ahmed is in early talks to come on board.

There have been no details given about the role he will play in the film, sources say that he'll be playing a very popular Marvel Comics characters - Sony is yet to confirm this.

However, Sony have stated that Venom will not feature as part of the Spiderman Universe series and that it will be a stand-alone film.

Ahmed has had a great 2016/17, starring in HBO's The Night Of for television, and had film roles in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Jason Bourne - where he starred opposite Matt Damn.

His work in The Night Of saw him nominated for a Golden Globe for best actor and a Screen Actors Guild for 'outstanding performance by a male actor in a television movie or limited series'.

He's also a recording artist having released eight singles, and produced a mixtape called 'Englishstan' which he released in 2016.

Earlier this year, following the London terror attack, when a 48-year-old man drove a van at worshippers leaving the Finsbury Park Mosque, and the Grenfell Tower disaster, Ahmed was vocal about the treatment of Muslims by the British media.

He took to Twitter, writing: "When crazy Muslim kills, it's MUSLIM TERROR. When Muslims save lives and lead relief at Grenfell where's the MUSLIM HEROES headlines?"

Venom is set to be directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and written by Scott Rosenberg (Kangaroo Jack) and Jeff Pinker (The Amazing SpiderMan 2).

The film, although not part of the 'official' Spiderman series may play as a nice interlude whilst we wait for the sequel to Spiderman: Homecoming which hit cinemas in 2017.

A follow-up is expected for 2019, although no clear details have been given for that yet.
