Actor Will Mellor has revealed he once accidentally got someone else's cat put down - only realising when his arrived on his doorstep a month later.

The former Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps star explained how someone had arrived at his doorstep saying they'd found his cat, who looked a little worse for wear.

A trip to the vets revealed that the poor moggy had cancer and had to be put down, so letting his kids say their goodbyes, he paid for the heartbreaking procedure and placed the animal's ashes on his windowsill.

The only thing is, it turned out that wasn't actually Mellor's family pet.

Recalling the anecdote to Ralf Little on their Two Pints With Will and Ralf podcast, Mellor said: "I get a knock on the door - 'We've got your cat'.

"It was haggard. He had something wrong with his throat.

"So I took him to the vet, and they said, 'He's got throat cancer, got it really bad, we advise you put him down'.

"I thought, my daughter's going to be upset. So I brought him home, let them have one more day with the cat, taking pictures with him, saying goodbye to him.

"On the day, I was so upset they put me in the relatives' room. It was terrible, I was so emotional. After, we buy a cheap urn for the ashes and put it on the side.

"Anyway, a month goes by and then the buzzer goes - 'We've got your cat, it's been run over'. It was someone else's cat. I've put down someone else's cat!

"So I'm like, 'Who the f***'s on my windowsill then? I've got the ashes of someone's cat on there, and they don't know where the cat is, and I've just killed it."

Mellor shared the painful story on his podcast, which he announced at the beginning of the year, saying he would be reuinting with former co-star Ralf Little.

Explaining more about the project in a video posted to social media, Mellor said: "It's set in a pub, me and Ralf having a couple of pints, like Gaz and Jonny, talking about all sorts from the old days to any kind of pub banter.

"Putting the world to rights in our own way, playing a few silly games."

...Well, all that and discussing that time he put someone else's cat down. Ouch.
