Chappell Roan's nipple dress at the Grammys was more intentional than you might think.
The world's biggest music event was as eventful as ever when it kicked off on Sunday evening (1 February).
From Donald Trump threatening to sue the host over an Epstein joke, to Cher accidentally announcing a dead artist as record of the year - it had it all.
If you tuned in or are catching up, you also would have noticed the American singer-songwriter rocking up to the Grammys in an eye-catching dress.

Known for hits like 'Good Luck, Babe!' and 'Pink Pony Club', the 27-year-old wore a brown, wispy, chiffon frock, which looked to be hanging from two nipple piercings.
But on closer inspection, it appears those piercings were prosthetics applied to Roan’s chest.

And the look wasn't just shocking for the sake of being shocking - the dress was a contemporary recreation by Castro Freitas of a legendary haute couture design by the late Manfred Thierry Mugler.
It was first shown on the Mugler runway in 1998, and back then, the silk slip really did hang from the model's nipple rings.
The design caused a bit of a stir then, and clearly, it still has that power now. It was again worn during the Spring/Summer runway for 2026.

Roan's makeup artist Andrew Dahling explained to Elle that the look was a nod to the past.
“We’ve seen Chappell in so many campy, over-the-top looks, and I think that with the fake tattoos, the prosthetics, and the dress, we discussed doing something a little more sultry—a little more real,” Dahiling said.
“It’s a Mugler medieval fantasy for the carpet.
“We wanted the makeup look to be sultry and smoky, with a little ’90s influence to honor the era this archival gown comes from.”

As you'd expect people have been very opinionated, with one person tweeting: "They will call this 'empowering' but call Sydney Sweeney 'trashy'."
"Why even wear clothes at that point? Anyone else sick of everything being hyper-sexualized?" a second penned.
"I don’t get why women are choosing this kind of 'style' or statement. I think it just looks gross," another wrote.

Not everyone was so offended, as a fourth user commented: "Should be a standard dress for all the hotties to wear in my opinion."
Someone else also pointed out: "I love how women dressing this way always p**ses men off.
"If women hide behind a pay wall, guess the gender that’ll be lining up to pay to view. Stinking jealousy and hypocrisy."
