Diane Keaton shared a heartwarming final post on social media before she died.
The Oscar-winner passed away at the age of 79 on Saturday (11 October) after a reported sudden downturn in her health.
Much loved for her roles in The Godfather and First Wives Club, her family confirmed to US magazine People that the tragedy took place in California.
"There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness," a spokesperson said.
A friend of the actor has since told the outlet that 'she declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her'.
"It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit," they said.
"In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private.

Her last Instagram post on 11 April was with her golden retriever Reggie at home with organic biscuits from her Keaton Collection.
Keaton's National Pet Day caption read: "Proof our pets have great taste, too," alongside images of her playing with Reggie.
Keaton's last post was with her pet (Instagram/@diane_keaton) The pet was first introduced on her social media pages in a video back in October 2020.
"THIS IS MY NEW DOG, REGGIE!!! IS SHE HALF HORSE OR HALF DOG? MAYBE SHE’S INSANE! I LOVE HER!" Keaton wrote.
The actor's final upload was met with tributes from fans, as one person wrote: "Thank you for your talent, your animal advocacy, your immeasurable charm. You will be missed."
"Dearest Diane, I will miss your style, humor and grace. You are a true queen who paved the road for so many," another added.
Keaton's breakthrough came in 1972's The Godfather, considered by many fans as the greatest film of all time (CBS via Getty Images) Hollywood reacted to the news yesterday, as her First Wives Club co-star Bette Midler wrote on Instagram: “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me.
“She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was … oh, la, lala!”
Ben Stiller also said on X: “Diane Keaton. One of the greatest film actors ever. An icon of style, humor and comedy. Brilliant. What a person.”
Keaton won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Annie Hall in 1977.
Despite high-profile relationships with the likes of Al Pacino and Warren Beatty, she never got married. She adopted her daughter, Dexter, in 1996, and her son, Duke, in 2001.
