Number one Dolly Parton song was banned from radio over 'suggestive' lyrics

A number one Dolly Parton song was actually banned from being played on the radio and by DJs over lyrics that were viewed as being 'suggestive'.

In her book Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics, the country star, who has tragically died aged 80, recalled how DJs refused to play the 1975 single 'The Bargain Store'.

She explained this was because they found some of the lyrics in the track to be 'dirty' or 'too strongly worded for some conservative country music broadcasters.'

The music legend passed away aged 80, her family confirmed in a devastating statement on Tuesday (25 August).

Dolly’s publicist Marcel Pariseau said she had been treated at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center before she died following a short battle.

The type of cancer she had has not been disclosed. Her team said: "Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched.

"Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand.

"After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones.”

But earlier in her career, there was one main reason that DJs refused to play 'The Bargain Store'.

It was thought that lines such as 'you can easily afford the price' were suspected to be viewed as a reference to prostitution.

The lyrics read: "The bargain store is open, come inside. You can easily afford the price.

"Love is all you need to purchase all the merchandise. And I can guarantee you’ll be completely satisfied."

Explaining in her book why the song was banned from many stations, she said: "When I wrote 'The Bargain Store,' I swear on my life that I was never thinking about love in any vulgar way.

"Somehow, this lyric is a dirty thing to a man. But I never saw it that way. Every man I know thinks it's dirty."

Parton then explained that she used to word 'bargain' as a metaphor for a potential relationship.

She said: "All I was thinking of was the heart: 'If you don't mind the merchandise is slightly used, with a little mending it can be good as new.'

"I was saying that you'll be surprised at how good this broken heart is. Just take it. You'll never be sorry that you did.

"The words just meant that I've had relationships: I've been through stuff; I'm not new at this."

"I thought for sure that I had written a hit song," Parton continues. "And then the disc jockeys wouldn't play it."

Eventually the song started to be played and 'The Bargain Store' climbed to the top spot, earning a No. 1 space on the charts.

It was Parton's fifth number one on the country chart as a solo artist, spending nine weeks on the country chart.
