Being one of the most famous rappers in the world, Eminem has referenced plenty of people in his songs over his long career - and they haven't always been happy about it.
The 'Real Slim Shady' star is marking his 54th birthday this weekend, having released a dozen solo albums between 1996 and 2024, as well as appearing as a member of rap groups D12 and Bad Meets Evil.
Eminem's songs have included many people who met Eminem through his life, from school bullies, his children, and his own mother.
While some tracks have included heartwarming references to his children, other lyrics have been so controversial they ended in lawsuits.
DeAngelo Bailey
DeAngelo Bailey was named in the song 'Brain Damage', where he goes into excessive detail about being beaten up in a school bathroom by Bailey, with even the school principle and his own mother later joining in.
Advert
Eminem would say that the song was based on true incidents in subsequent interviews, saying: "I changed little things up just to make the story a little bit more interesting. The whole story is true up until my brain falls out of my head."

Bailey would go on to sue Eminem over the song, but Judge Deborah Servitto would rule in favour of Eminem, even delivering part of her ruling as a rap.
"Mr. Bailey complains that his rap is trash, So he's seeking compensation in the form of cash, Bailey thinks he's entitled to some monetary gain, Because Eminem used his name in vain," the ruling said.
It continued: "The lyrics are stories no-one would take as fact, They're an exaggeration of a childish act, It is therefore this court's ultimate position, That Eminem is entitled to summary disposition."
Bailey has since faded from the public eye since the ruling. He was said to be a sanitation worker at the time of the trial.
Kim Scott

Eminem's ex-wife appeared on several of his songs, but perhaps most notably on the song 'Kim' which featured on The Marshall Mathers LP which was released in 2000 and caused considerable controversy about its subject matter, in which Eminem makes his ill feeling towards her clear.
The pair would marry twice, including after the release of 'Kim', before divorcing for the second and final time in 2007, and also have a daughter together, Hailie Jade Scott.
Kim has struggled with mental health illness as well as substance abuse over the years.
On 16 February 2026, she allegedly crashed a Range Rover into a parked pickup truck, and has since pleaded no contest to charges of driving while impaired and failing to stop after the crash.
She appeared in court on 13 August after violating bond conditions, where Judge William H. Hackel III revoked her bond, adding that if she were placed in an in-patient facility, then she would be released from jail.
Hailie Jade

Eminem has written several songs about his daughter Hailie Jade, who has become a social media influencer with some 3.8 million followers on Instagram.
Hailie Jade was born in 1995, and is now 30 years old.
Eminem is also now a grandfather after Hailie Jade welcomed her son Elliot Marshall McClintock.
Speaking on the Just a Little Shady podcast after becoming a mum, she said: "'What are babies supposed to be doing at six months?' And obviously every baby is different, so you're not going to go straight off of that.
"But it has made me feel a lot more calm about parenting."
Nathan 'Nate' Mathers

Nate is Eminem's younger brother, who he referenced in his song 'Headlights', which was released in 2013.
The song touches on how Nathan was put into foster care when he was just eight years old, with Eminem being 20 at the time.
As he was legal adult, Eminem has since opened up about how he had tried to adopt his younger brother so he could stay with family.
Speaking to Rolling Stone in 2004, hesaid: “When he was taken away I always said if I ever get in a position to take him, I would take him.
“I tried to apply for full custody when I was 20, but I didn’t have the means.”
Eminem eventually gained legal custody of Nate when his brother was 16.
Nate is now a DJ, actor, and music producer, and is married with three children, sharing a post in 2022 for his fourth anniversary, writing: “4 years married to you. It sounds so minimal compared to the 20 years you’ve been my best friend.”
Alaina Scott

Alaina Scott is Eminem's adopted child. She is three years older than Hailie Jade, with Eminem being a grandfather to her daughter.
She is mentioned by name in the song 'Mockingbird', and now works as a travel blogger.
Alaina is the niece of Eminem's ex-wife Kim Scott, and he legally adopted her in the early 2000s.
Speaking to Rolling Stone in 2004, he said: "I have full custody of my niece. My niece has been a part of my life ever since she was born. Me and Kim pretty much had her, she'd live with us wherever we was at."
Debbie Nelson

Nelson is Eminem's mother, whose sometimes difficult relationship with him featured heavily in a lot of his earlier music.
This included the 2002 song 'Cleanin' Out My Closet', where he accused her of neglect and drug abuse, with the lyrics saying: “Witnessin’ your mama poppin’ prescription pills in the kitchen... Goin’ through public housing systems, victim of Münchausen’s syndrome. My whole life I was made to believe I was sick when I wasn’t.”
In 1999, Debbie sued Eminem for defamation over the song 'My Name Is', claiming the song implied she was a drug user.
She would go on to settle out of court for $25,000, saying that the idea to sue Eminem had been her lawyer's idea.
Debbie died in 2024 at the age of 69 following a lung cancer diagnosis.
