Gordon Ramsay explains 'red flags' to look for when ordering a burger

Gordon Ramsay spoke to LADbible as he backs a surprising campaign

Gordon Ramsay has revealed the major ‘red flags’ we should all be looking out for when ordering a burger.

The celebrity chef is no stranger to the sacred beef patty in a bun, owning his chain of Street Burger restaurants across the UK as well as his Gordon Ramsay Burger restaurant in Harrods.

Plus, he’s racked up a whopping 78.8 million views on TikTok showing off his ‘delicious wagyu burger’ recipe. So, it's fair to say he knows what he’s talking about when it comes to what goes into a good burger.

And as Ramsay has previously shared restaurant red flags around the idea of the ‘soup of the day’ or the specials menu, we decided we’d ask him for his tips for bagging a good burger while you’re out and about.

“First of all, when you stuff a burger, you spoil the texture,” Ramsay kicks us off.

“Burgers need to sit and rest. So, when you temper and mess around by stuffing them with blue cheese or courgette- no, keep it simple and don't over garnish it.”

I mean, we’ve all seen those burgers online now with gooey cheese pouring out the middle or completely camouflaged in toppings – and the chef’s having none of it.

“But the big red flag for me is when you can't f**king see the burger, be careful what you're eating,” he continues.

“Because the secret to a great burger: The bun, top and bottom.

“Then you got some peppery rocket, or some salad, some form of Sriracha, mayo. But you want to see the colour and make sure it’s caramelised.”

Oh, and in case this one wasn’t obvious, Ramsay adds one final red flag: “If it’s grey – any tinges of grey in a burger, get out.”

Ramsay was speaking at the launch of Burger King’s ‘most premium product to date’, The Wagyu.

And while he didn't make this burger, it's pretty rare that we’d see him backing this kind of campaign, but he says it was a ‘big breakthrough moment’ to be having British wagyu beef available for a product like this.

“It was a bit of a dream, because it’s something I’ll use on my menu,” he says of the 100 percent British meat that the fast-food chain have worked with farmers for.

With the campaign suggesting he ‘wishes he made it’, it seems this new Burger King item is one big green flag for the restaurateur.

Again, you can’t help but be surprised that Ramsay would be getting himself tied up with a fast-food chain like this but he as he says: “I do very little of these things, and I don't label stuff. I don't just stick my name above the door. It has to have integrity.”

The Wagyu is made from this precious 100 percent British wagyu beef and topped with caramelised onions, pink pickled onions, rocket, crispy onions and caramelised onion mayo in a seeded brioche bun.

Putting his name in there with it, Ramsay says he hopes it encourages people to get out and ‘buy a burger’ that supposedly hasn’t got a ‘red flag’ in sight.

“I hope they get behind what the farmers are doing,” he adds. “There's now 700 farms operating with this incredible 100 percent British wagyu. So, it's about time the British public got rid of the snob factor with wagyu.

“And now, for the first time, as a quick serve, we can indulge in something special.

“I'm not just putting my name to another flame grill. This is quite a big breakthrough moment.”
