Hayden Panettiere's estranged mum Lesley Vogel has made her first public comments since her daughter's tragic death.
The late actor was pronounced dead at her property aged 36 in South Carolina on Sunday (16 August).
Panettiere's ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach were present when she died, according to a police report obtained by NBC.
The report says Hickerson became visibly emotional after Panettiere was pronounced dead and showed police a 'bag of medication' that he said she had been taking.
Advert
Panettiere and Hickerson had been in a relationship which appeared to end in 2020.
Speaking to NBC, Vogel described Hickerson as 'a person in her life we have been trying to get rid of for quite some time'.
Referring to her daughter, the 70-year-old said that Panettiere 'sadly lost her way'.

"I think Hayden was an amazingly talented person in so many departments and I think young people who grow up in the entertainment industry - it is a struggle and it's a very challenging industry and it's not unusual for them to sadly find the wrong path," she added.
The Greenville Police Department said in a statement: "[Officers] accompanied by EMS personnel, responded to a report of an unresponsive female at around 1:50 p.m. Sunday.
"Upon arrival, medical assistance was administered; however, the individual, later identified as Hayden Panettiere, was pronounced deceased at the scene."
No cause of death has been announced, as Vogel said she had 'very little information as the investigation was ongoing but that she would be speaking with a detective'.
She said the timing of the 911 call is 'not the typical hour of the day that you are partying, generally speaking'.

Vogel managed Panettiere’s acting career from childhood, but at 19, Panettiere ended their professional relationship, saying she wanted Vogel to simply be her mother.
During a May 2026 appearance on Jay Shetty‘s podcast, On Purpose with Jay Shetty, Panettiere opened up about her complicated relationship, saying she viewed Vogel as her 'boss'.
“Everything was business,” she recalled. “I became the confidant and the assistant and the therapist and the shoulder to cry on and everything but her child.”
She severed their professional relationship, telling her, 'I don’t want us to work together anymore. I just want you to be my mom'.
