Fortunately, Clarkson was able to avoid having an emergency heart bypass after doctors at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford were able to perform heart stent surgery to successfully clear the arteries.
Recalling how he felt after being sent home from the hospital, the presenter wrote: "The next morning I went home, and here I am, two hours later, writing this and sort of thinking, 'Crikey, that was close.'"
What are blocked arteries?
According to the British Heart Foundation, the condition occurs when there's a 'build-up of fibrous and fatty material inside the arteries' and is often a precursor to coronary heart disease. Depending on the location of the blockage, the condition can lead to life threatening illnesses such as a heart attack or stroke.

While enjoying island paradise, Clarkson suddenly found it difficult to swim and couldn't walk up a flight of stairs 'without holding someone's hand'.
However, he had brushed the symptoms off at the time, adding: "These problems all manifested themselves in one day, which made the rest of my holiday extremely relaxing because all I did was sit in a chair drinking wine and eating cheese."
However, Clarkson's health began to deteriorate further upon returning home, with the 64-year-old explaining how he had woken up last Wednesday feeling 'clammy', alongside a sensation of 'tightness' in his chest.
This was followed by the concerning sensation of 'pins and needles' in his left arm, at which point the presenter made the decision to head off to hospital.

"I just have to not do any manual labour or dishwasher emptying for the next four years," he joked. "At least I think that’s what the doctor said."
