Matthew McConaughey’s mum, 94, recalls his dad dying of heart attack while they made love

Matthew McConaughey's mum talked about how her husband died of a heart attack while they were making love, and how she'd nicknamed a specific part of his anatomy 'The Beast'.

His family isn't shy about discussing any of this and the latest time it came up in conversation was during a mother's day message where Hollywood star Matthew said he had 'the most interesting mum in the world'.

The message was all part of an advert for his Pantalones tequila brand where he talked about his mother Kay, saying she had invited his dad to his own wedding and had 'one very clear thing she loved about my dad', then let the 94-year-old say her piece.

"He was good in bed, we called it 'The Beast'," Kay McConaughey said during the advert of a particularly beloved part of her husband's anatomy.

"He had a heart attack making love to me. Yes he did. What a way to go. They tried to cover him up. Ha ha ha, I said 'don't you dare cover him up'.

"I want everybody to see what's making me so happy all this time. Let 'The Beast' show. They try to cover you up when you're dead. No, no, no, no. 'The Beast' wasn't dead."

James, nicknamed 'Big Jim' for reasons open to your imagination, had always told his children he reckoned he'd die while making love to Kay, and in 1992 he managed to depart this world in exactly the manner he'd hoped for.

McConaughey's parents James and Kay had three children, as many marriages punctuated by two divorces and were described by their son 'like the Pacific Ocean in a storm'.

He'd previously written in his memoir Greenlights about his dad dying, describing the moment his mum called him to deliver the sad news, writing: "I got a call from my mum: 'Your dad died'.

"My knees buckled. I couldn’t believe it. He was my dad. Nobody or nothing could kill him. Except mum.

"He’d always told me and my brothers, 'Boys, when I go, I’m gonna be makin' love to your mother.' And that’s what happened. He had a heart attack when he climaxed."

The actor later told the WTF with Marc Maron podcast he found out later on that when the ambulance came to collect his dad's body all his neighbours gathered round to see while Kay kept uncovering him as she declared 'I want the world to see why his nickname was Big Jim'.

Kay told Red Table Talk in 2020 about the moment her husband died, saying: "My husband died making love to me, and I remember saying when he fell back, I said, 'What's the matter, big boy? I wear you out?'

"And he's [giving] no response, no response and I'm thinking, 'Oh my god, something's wrong'.

"I had no idea that it was too much. His heart just stopped, you know? We had a party for him, kind of a celebration of his life."
