Pete Davidson describes heartbreaking decision he has to make as 9/11 anniversary approaches

Pete Davidson has opened up about why the upcoming anniversary of 9/11 will be 'way harder' than previous years.

The comedian is among the millions of people who were personally touched by the tragedy that took place on September 11, 2001, as his firefighter father was among those who sadly died.

He lost his dad, Scott Matthew Davidson, at the age of just seven and suspects that he might find it 'extra tough' to deal with his year following the birth of his daughter, who is sweetly named after her late grandad.

Davidson, 32, doesn't shy away from discussing his grief with fans and how the death of his dad has impacted his life.

He previously revealed that Scott was supposed to be picking him up on that fateful day, but his mother Amy did instead - and he only discovered what had happened after seeing a tribute to his dad on TV.

The firefighter was among the emergency responders who were dispatched to the World Trade Center when the devastating attacks unfolded.

At the age of just 33, Scott was killed after racing inside to help save people shortly after the second hijacked plane struck. Sadly, he did so just moments before the building collapsed.

This year is the 25th anniversary of the terror attack that changed the landscape of the world forever, and it's the first time that Davidson has been a dad himself while mourning his own.

The Staten Island-born star and his former girlfriend Elsie Hewitt welcomed their daughter, Scottie Rose Hewitt Davidson, into the world last December.

He reckons it is 'really cool' that the model also wanted to name their tot after his heroic dad, as he told the New York Post: "My dad’s name was Scott, but his nickname was Scotty.

"When she arrived, we both looked at her and were like, 'She looks like a Scottie'. It’s nice to keep that name alive."

Parenthood has given him a new perspective on the situation too, as Davidson admitted that he used to consider his dad as 'an old guy', even though he was only 33 when he passed away.

The former Saturday Night Live star, who celebrates his 33rd birthday in November, said: "But now I’m there, and I have a kid, and that would be like my kid not having her dad.

"So this year is extra tough, but also extra beautiful because I get to spend the day with Scottie. It’ll be very healing and special."

Davidson said he has not yet determined how he will eventually explain what happened to Scott to his young daughter, but 'luckily has some time' to work this out.

"Honestly, this year is way harder than it’s been in a really long time because I have Scottie, and now I’m the age that my dad was when he died," he went on. "So I’m just kind of like, 'Holy s**t'."

However, he does look forward to the day that he can show little Scottie the videos and pictures of her namesake that he treasures and the 'classic stories' he will share with her at some point.

The funnyman explained that he has noticed his daughter 'staring' at a picture of his late dad and likes to think 'that his presence is somehow around' her.

On Thursday (10 September), he is hosting a comedy benefit at Madison Square Garden in support of charities that help first responders who were caught up in 9/11 and their families, alongside fellow comedian Jon Stewart.

Although remembering the events that transpired 25 years ago is 'such a sad thing' for Davidson, he wants to 'have a good time' in honour of his dad, and the nearly 3,000 people who were killed in the attacks.
